|
|
Have been using my Tomtom 300 for some years and I now have a new job that will require me to use daily for deliveries.
My Tomtom is using version 5...is the latest map much improved on version 5?

Wow, that's a long way behind!
Many people complain that there are few noticeable differences between each new map version, but I reckon you'll see a lot of differences between yours and the latest.
You'll also need to update the operating software of the Go300, to use a new map, the current version for you is v7.903, and you need to do that BEFORE you buy the new map.
To install it, you'll need to use TomTom's "Home" utility, which you can get from TomTom HERE.
As you're so far behind, you'll probably need to use Home v1 to update as far as you can, and then install Home v2 to update further until you get to v7.903.
The small, easily-missed download link is just below the main box for Home v2.
Once you've updated the software, you can use Home v2 to buy and download the latest map (this has just come out and is version 840.xxxx) |

Andy
Many thanks for your reply...never thought it would be as complicated to update.
I will give it a go later today...just hope it is a painless operation, but I doubt I'll be that lucky.
Kind regards.

Don't forget to do a FULL Explorer Backup, so that at least you can return to a working system, IF things go wrong.
See #1 of the TT FAQ Page. _________________ Richard

wyattnorm its not really very complicated to update, its just that because the operating system for your 300 may never have been updated, each outstanding update has to be installed one after the other. This would normally have to be done once every few months or year, but now you may have catchup to do.
Again some of the older operating system updates can only be installed using the old version of TomTom Home, the software used upon your PC to perform the updates. So it would be worth checking what operating system you have on the 300 to see how far behind it maybe.
Turn on your device, when the display shows a map, tap the lower right corner of the screen and the version number for the operating system should be shown, tap the screen again where version is shown and the 300 should now show more details about itself, the application and the map.
What operating version you have will control how many update cycles you have to do. Its a very very good idea to do a complete windows backup of the 300 before each and every stage of the updates and try the device out to make sure each one is working correctly before proceeding to the next.
Depending upon application version there maybe little or nothing to do, the good thing is that except for the new map everything else is free. |

Well spotted Eric, I had taken Norman's "My Tomtom is using version 5..." to mean he was on Software version 5 as well as maps version 5, but that MAY not be true.
Post the details from the info page as Eric describes and we'll see where we need to go from there. |

Well done, I can't say I couldn't have done it without you, because so far I haven't, but you have certainly opened my eyes.
The info from Tomtom screen is.....
Device AK******* (Admin Edit by Oldboy
APP 5.000 (4109/050407 )/S 723
30mb ram (free 29mg)
GPS V1, Boot 2.02
Map GB-Map V562
If you can throw more info my way it will really be appreciated.
I have used computers for years, but I never venture far from my regular programs and bookmarks appertaining to my hobbies and interests...so I never learn much.
Your help is invaluable.
Kind regards.

You do indeed have quite an old map and application.
Do a FULL Backup now, and then work your way through the advice that Andy/Eric have given you above.
If you get stuck, or are unsure about the next step to take, just post back with where you've got to.
The first thing to download is the older version of HOME, which you can from Here. _________________ Richard

I just knew it wouldn't-couldn't be that easy.
In the end I arrived at a page that offered me the chance to download the latest maps...thinking I must have updated everything as required I tried and was told that there was insufficent space.
I half expected that and had a 2gb card ready. I reverted to the back up copy I made when I first bought the TT.
Not too sure how to start with a new card, I put it in the TT and tried to copy to the card, upon restarting TT 'no maps found', so it justs shows that knowing what you are doing is half the battle.
Should you copy to the disk inserted into TT or computer?
It's going to be a long weekend.
My wife keeps eyeing me and saying...'Not finished yet'....smirk...smirk.

Just had a small shock, email inbox says TomTom thank me for my order?
Quick look at the Tomtom info screen and the details now read...
App7,903
C9183/081205 OS2344
29mb---(free 7.6mb)
map version V562.0
Question .....is this now an updated Tomtom? or bearing in mind the 'insufficent space' message...is it possible for an incomplete installation to be installed.
I'm sorry to continue pestering......

You will need to free up some space on the existing memory card for the new map or get a larger card for the device.
As a starter for ten look at the voices folder on the device and remove all the files except the following:
data04.chk
data04.vif
data05.chk
data05.vif
These files are the UK based voices, the rest are a waste of space unless you need something other than a UK voice. With these removed try again to install the map, if it still won't fit get a larger memory card for the unit, your device certainly has the latest software installed but your map is still very out of date - Mike |

Norman you need to copy whatever card you had in the TT to give you the app version of 7.903 onto your new blank card. 2GB should be more than enough for the new GB&ROI map. If you have a card reader on the PC put the blank card into that and copy the complete card from the TT to it.
Then you should be able to copy the new map to that. |

Norman, it might be useful if we knew where you are located roughly, presumably in the UK. _________________ Richard
