Hi, I'm researching for my 1st SatNav purchase.

I live in rural Dorset and my need is for stress-free and safe navigation from A to B. Lane guidance when in Bristol/Bath/Bournemouth/Poole/Salisbury/Exeter etc would be really helpful. I don't do much motorway driving.

The specifications for a number of SatNavs feature lane guidance, but comments for some of them seem to indicate this is for major motorway junctions only.

Do different manufacturers and models offer differing levels of lane guidance? If so, which (if any) do you think would provide the lane guidance I'm looking for?

Thanks
Martin

Good question, I'm looking at buying a new satnav for the car (have had TT & Garmin in the past) and am wondering how good these lane indication systems are, do they just work on motorways and if not where else do they work. the sales 'patter' from TT, Garmin et al is all well and good but what does it mean in the real world.

The 10's of thousands of posts on this site from folks having problems tends to suggest that the reality of ownership is perhaps a long way from what the manufacturers would have you believe.

So is lane guidance as good as its cracked up to be and what about traffic information, which is the best system to go for???

There was some mention of non-motorway lane guidance some while ago, which DID mention an example - try a search. As you say, it is generally concentrated on motorway junctions.

As for traffic information, maybe that is better pursued in the lengthy threads elsewhere on that exact subject, leaving this particular one with a better chance of a quick answer for m128 Smile

The latest TomTom maps include lane guidance for junctions/roundabouts in towns as well as major roads. However, I would use it as another bit of 'guidance' and rely on road signs to be in the correct lane as they are not always accurate.
