The TomTom iPhone car kit is available on the UK Apple online store for £99.95, and it includes the app. http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TX529ZM/A?mco=MTA0MzE1ODg#overview

Not too bad a price but what will that mean for the people who have already bought the app, and those of us who use other nav apps?

It also says the Car Kit app is only compatible with iPhone 3G and 3GS. No mention of iPod Touch, but this may simply mean that without the car kit the app is not compatibale. Not very clear in this regard.

Typical cock-up - can anything involving TomTom ever be done right?

MacWorld UK here is quoting TomTom as issuing the following press release:

TomTom wrote:
"TomTom announces today that the TomTom car kit for the iPhone will have a recommended retail price of £99.99."

The TomTom car kit will be available this October and will be sold separately from the TomTom app. It will be compatible with the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS."

So despite the original Applestore statement (long since removed from all sites) that £99.95 got you both app and cradle, it will be just the cradle when released!

£99 for just the cradle....then £59 for the app - way too much.

And how on earth can there be such confusion between Apple and TomTom when this thing has been planned for months?

I will stick with the Brodit active mount and the iO-Play for amplified sound through the car speakers, at £100 someone is having a laugh! even though its not a funny joke - Mike

You're assuming there's significant coordination between both parties - which I doubt - we're talking TomTom here; they've not managed well with the iPhone so far - late, under featured, delayed cradle etc etc.

Who knows, maybe Apple assumed that at the ridiculous price point it must surely include the app. as well? You would have thought that such an extensive description of the product and its use - full of TomTom promotional statements no less - would have been proofed by both parties before going live? Maybe someone at TomTom who did proof the page assumed the price must include both?

The reality is a decent mount costs £20-£30. Add £10-15 for integrated speaker. A GPS receiver can cost £45-60. Add that it's a branded product, and I don't really see how much less it could have cost. If TomTom had put a reasonable effort behind the software to make it as well as we know they can, then this wouldn't seem like such a rip off.

As it is, some smartass at TomTom appears to think this is an opportunity to fleece gadget-fanatic iPhone owners with minimal effort and make their PNDs look reasonably priced at the same time.

Ah well, the good news is TomTom has seriously stiff competition in the iPhone market and only those prepared to pay through the nose need apply!

I don't disagree with you Mike, though it's only fair to point out that I've just been googling and the Brodit is around £44, the io £64, making the combo £8 more than the TomTom solution before you factor in the cost of fitting etc. I know they're not like for like in comparison terms, but for those looking for a new solution, the TT mount isn't ridiculous given the specs.

The problem TomTom chose to ignore is that they were over-engineering a solution and failing to make it cost effective (might that be more a reflection of Apple's aspirations than TomTom themselves?). And in bringing the cradle to market they've implied the iPhone's integral GPS capabilities are inefficient to boot (which can't be pleasing to Apple, despite being a fairly honest appraisal - unless of course Apple wanted a way to address criticism?).

TomTom have, at a combined price of £159.94, produced a nicely mounted, robust but highly under-featured navigation system. If they're smart, the delay in cradle introduction will enable them to coincide the release with an update to the app. that delivers all the missing functionality, though I'd hate to imagine the total cost of ownership if/when they introduce live service subscriptions!
