I inqadvertantly deleted my maps from my nuvi 660 and on contacting Garmin they tell me the only way to re install, is to send the unit back at a cost of £30 !!! . This is for the priveledge of re-installing the original 07 maps...................... If I want the latest maps it's another £56 or £100 for
lifetime updates...
The only reason to stay with Garmin is for their excellent traffic module (it always works well for me.
Does anyone know if it is possible to re-install the maps which I have deleted from my HD. I have tried mapsource without success.
Thanks |

You haven't by any chance got an ancient backup that you took when you first got the unit, and may have forgotten about? _________________ David

Hi Graham - Sorry I can't come up with more helpful suggestions for sourcing the maps. But if you don't get anything useful from anyone, and you like your unit, then I would bite on the bullet and cough up the £30.
It actually doesn't seem a bad deal; Garmin have said in the past (I think) that if you lose your maps, you need a new unlock code which normally costs the full whack new maps charge. They certainly used to give a warning with their nautical maps against overwriting them as they could not then be recovered (and of course, said it was totally the owner's responsibility!).
When you DO get your replacement, may I suggest that the first thing you do IS make a backup of the software and maps on something like your PC or an external drive. I hope you don't think this too patronising, but it seems to be something that an awful lot of people overlook, maybe because they don't think of a satnav as a fallible computer)? _________________ David

Thanks David.
The problem is that handtec have the 760 refurb for £148 with the latest maps!
It doesn't make sense to pay the £30 plus £58 for the latest maps (£100)
for lifetime updates ,when the 760 has so many more features.
I take your point re the backup and whatever I decide to do will do this
first.
