With my nuvi 255 I can check this for myself with the unit in demo mode (tools..settings..system..GPS simulator ON).
For me, turning my euro maps off also turns off my built-in POIs. But the PGPSW POIs still show.
But why turn off the euro maps? My nuvi is happy to run the built-in euro maps at the same time as custom maps on the SD card.

suppose its habit to turn off the ones not being used, so if i install the custom poi's and leave both map sets ticked should be ok? |

That works fine for me.
I only untick a mapset if it overlaps with another that I do want to view at that moment.
