I would be greateful for any advice on this one!
First, the limits: I'm about to drive a thirsty car from sweden to corsica, my sd card can hold 512 Mb. My first thought was that TTN3s "major roads of europe" was the solution. Given a thirsty car I need to be on the lookout for petrol stations. I've heard that "major roads..(MRE)" dont come with POI? Is that right? In that case I better go with D3 and cut out the part I can fit into 512 Mb?
Second, If I prefer the coloring and details of TTN3 I can't cut out parts of various maps to fit into a limited sd card. Is that true?
No single product has it all, it seems
Regards

You are right. For your limited card space you will have to go with Destinator. There are some problems to expect there as well - cross country routing will not work properly.
You cannot cut TomTom maps in any way.
But... What you could do is use the MRE map with custom POIs. POIs for major petrol station networks are readily available here, and they tend to be more accurate than the ones provided with TomTom... _________________ Lutz

As Lutz says, TomTom Navigator 3's Major Roads of Europe map lacks any built in POIs, but you can add your own POI files to it.
That said, Navigator 3 seems to misbehave somewhat when you do add POI files to Major Roads of Europe. Doing so caused the icons in my Find dialog (no matter whether I had Major Roads of Europe or Great Britain maps selected) to turn to concentric squares (this is with Navigator 3.02T). I had to restore my global settings file from a backup to fix this.
I take this as just one indication that the program doesn't expect you to use POIs with the MRE map. It would seem sensible if POI support was officially added for MRE that you would have the ability to select POI files in your detailed map folders for use with the MRE map. Having to have separate copies in the MRE map folder means at best you land up with two identical copies of the same POI file on your system, and at worst two different copies of the same POI file on your system!
There's even an argument that putting POI files in your map folders is the wrong approach, and the ability to have one or more POI folders separate from your map folders would be better.
