Windows XP Pro 64bit edition. Outlook Express 64bit.
I am about to get a new PC and want to transfer my existing Outlook Express folders to it. I see an option in File.. Export.. Folders. But when I go for it I end up with it saying the export doesn't work, error initialising MAPI.
Means absolutely nothing to me (except that it won't export the rotten folders!).
I have found the folders (.dbx) buried about 15 levels down in Documents and Settings. Do you reckon simply copying these to my external USB drive for copying back to the new machine will work - new machine will be Vista 64bit and presumably using Windows Mail (or somesuch) under Vista. _________________ Dennis

Why are you still using Windows when you have a MacBook? For transfer of OE follow this guide. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Windows Easy Transfer

Been a while since I used Express but IIRC, you can select all mail within the inbox for example and simply drag and drop to a new folder on a pen drive or wherever (the copy option does not appear in the context menu or menu bar). Then open the inbox on your new mail application then drag and drop the emails in to the message pane. Repeat for other folders.
Doubles as an effective method to backup email. |

Only thing is, I did the download, then clicked on the install, it said it had installed, but there's no sign of the program anywhere!! _________________ Dennis

And that man's methods don't work for me (doesn't produce a WAB file for the address book, although that's not a problem as I have that on my webmail and presumably can export it from there).
Maybe my next desktop will be a full blown Mac as I really like them. _________________ Dennis

OK, at least we're in the trees, now for the wood...
I have four copies of migwiz.exe in ...
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\migwiz.exe - 241KB 18/02/2007
Windows\ServicePackFiles\amd64\migwiz.exe - 293KB 16/02/2007
Windows\system32\usmt\migwiz.exe - 293KB 16/02/2007
Windows\SysWOW64\usmt\migwiz.exe - 241KB 18/02/2007
These last two directories also have migwiz.exe.manifest - 2KB 25/03/2005 _________________ Dennis

Personally, when backing up my own data or safe guarding others data, i just copy the DBX files to a DVD and copy the WAB file from
c:\documents and settings\user name\application data\microsoft\address book
The "wizards" etc never fail to disappoint me...
You can Export the account setting from within OE by opening the Tools Menu, selecting Accounts, highlighting the Account and clicking Export...
Do the same on the new PC but use Import to import the accounts.
Use File, Import, Messages, Outlook Express 6, Import from OE6 store directory to import the emails
Use File, Import, Address Book to import the address book... |

I have not searched my pc. The directory I showed above is from the start menu on my Vista 32 system.
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Windows Easy Transfer
And that shortcut points to it. |
