I was discussing getting the tom tom gps mouse ipaq 2210 and so on with a mate, whos father has a BMW with built in sat nav, an dgyros that sense speed etc when the gps isn't working or available.
What are peoples verdict on how they compare considering that the ipaw solution doesn't have these, and how well does the lead tek mouse do in urban canyons or very built up areas?

Many thanks

Chris
ps iblew all my b'day money on sat nav for the first time today. play time starts next week!

Standard GPS like the leadtek do indeed have some problems in urban canyons. Mostly due to reflections (which gives you distorted signals)

Two ways to get you out of that

- a receiver that also speaks XTrac. That's a special mode that can use reflected signals and weaker signals and still make some sense of it

- everybody here on the forum needs to realise that TomTom have shown a revolutionary approach with their "Go" device. It contains a standalone accelerometer (some kind of a gyroscope, but without moving parts) that does NOT need to connect to the car mechanics/electronics to sense acceleration/deceleration both in direction of straight movement and at right angles (ie when turning).

I am not shy to predict that GPS receiver manufacturers are wiggeling right now to incorporate that feature into their receivers.

Once this has been incorporated you can maneuver urban canyons or tunnels with your portable GPS system and not miss the turn - even though you may have lost the GPS signal!

Now what about the Leadtek? you may ask. As I said in the beginning. Don't expect any miracles. You will have dropouts in urban canyons. But it's not worse than you see with any other ST (standard) mode receiver.
