When travelling at around 70 - 80mph the speed reading on my TomTom software is always around 5/6 mph too slow. The slower I'm going the more accurate it is.
A friend of mine has the same problem with a different GPS reciever. Is this an inbuilt problem with GPS recievers or is mine (and my friends) just not very accurate.
If it is a common problem, would it not be a good idea to include some sort of calibration software with TomTom? |

Hi,
Your GPS receiver is most likely to be more accurate than your car’s speedo, especially whilst you are travelling at a constant speed on a horizontal flat plane, i.e. you’re not going up or down an incline.
By law, in the UK, car speedos may read faster than the actual speed but never slower.

Hi Jp,
This isn't a problem with your gps receiver. Your speedometer is calibrated to read fast - all European vehicles (and probably worldwide too) are calibrated to be at least 5% over the actual road speed. There are several reasons for this - one of which is that you can't accuse the manufacturere of being in the wrong if you're "done" for speeding.
Assuming you have a decent (4 or more satellites) lock your gps is much more accurate than your vehicles instruments.

I noticed the same thing with mine. The fact remains that GPS will be the most accurate method of measuring speed....
Your car may also be reading different speeds if you have fitted aftermarket wheels. |
