I have a Samsung SPH-i700 Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 2003 (just upgraded, yes!). I purchased the Pharos Ostia GPS/Software because it was the only GPS advertised that specifically worked with the i700. The GPS is fine, the software is lacking. I need a recommendation for a GPS software product for use mainly in the U.S. I'm open to any recommendation and have looked into CoPilot Live, Mapopolis Navigator, PowerLoc Destinator, and TomTom Navigator - all the most recent versions.
I use the GPS for a wide range of functions including business and pleasure travel. But perhaps the most critical purpose is in a law enforcement capacity. I need to be able to quickly and safely find my way to a location while typically entering the address while driving - pulling over usually isn't an option. While I certainly would like to have great POIs, Pocket Outlook integration, and traffic integration, the software MUST:
1) Be easy to use / input data while driving;
2) Get me where I need to be as fast as possible (i.e. good routing);
3) Offer easy to understand voice directions, preferably with the street names included;
4) Be able to quickly re-route.
5) Give me a good idea where I am at all times (street names on map);
6) Be easy to see map/directions both during the day and night.
These are roughly in order of importance although each is important to me. I would GREATLY appreciate some help in pushing me toware the best product for my needs.
Thanks so much. |

In the UK it is illegal even to attempt it.
Perhaps voice operation might be a way forward, but I can't see this working in a vehicle with the wind noise created by a presumably high speed journey. _________________ Kam |

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about entering an address while speeding down a crowded street. I usually enter the address in Ostia at a red light. The point is just that I need software that makes it as fast (and safe) as possible. |

Good luck with your search. Unfortunately, none of the products I have used have been particularly easy to use for inputting addresses without really concentrating on the task. _________________ Kam |

You can enter information into a GPS while driving, I do it quite often. (As well as retuning the radio, talking to other people in the car and using a hands free phone). It's not illegal, providing that you don't hold the unit in your hand and that you drive with "due care and attention". (That's the UK law - other countries are probably similar).
As for the requirements, pretty much any GPS unit will cover items 2-6.
As for item 1, it sounds like you have read the reviews so you should get into your local dealer and check out specific models. The usability of a particular system is very subjective thing - a system that one person would like, another wouldn't.
The main thing to watch for is that the GPS has routing for "Emergency Services" so you can have it ignore things like bus lane restrictions when you are on a call.
Good luck! |
