The Crystal Ball tells me you are using a TomTom 520, these devices are prone to audio distortion when not powered from the external charger. TomTom supply the car charger as part of the kit and it is supposed to be used while in the vehicle, the battery is really only there for short walks/ home use or glitches in the car.
Keep it plugged in and you shouldn't experience this issue - Mike

It's normal. The device is not designed for battery use really - keep it plugged in to the ciggy lighter adaptor, even using only the navigation features. It won't run anywhere near all day on battery, far less with anything else going.
