What is the difference between backups on home,and explorer

HI,

I was wondering what is the difference between backing up your tomtom sat nav on windows explorer,and on tomtom homes web site,it looks very complicated to back up with the explorer method as i am new to this,and want to make sure i do it correctly on the home software it looks far easier, is one method safer or better can anyone explain thanks for any advice.

The Home Backup has had issues for some considerable time, with the 910 devices it made the Text To Speech system fail to work as it re-named most of the files within a folder, it also only allows a single backup to be taken, each subsequent backup will overwrite the previous one which is not good. It does work, but users have grown to mistrust Home.

A couple of issues using Home to do backups. First, whenever you backup using Home, it overwrites the previous backup made rather than creating a backup in a differently named folder. It's often better to have more than 1 backup set and overwriting defeats that purpose.

The second issue is that some users have observed that some files that should get backed up in fact get missed in the process.

Having said the above, be clear that for some, using just Home to do the backup doesn't seem to be an issue. As ou've observed, though, most here strongly suggest using Windows Explorer to do the job. It isn't hard and is much safer.

Here are the steps. First of all, in its 'wisdom', Windows hides certain files by default. They are there but aren't able to be seen. The problem is that backup utilities sometimes miss these hidden files. So, we want to make them visible. Go into Control Panel. Folder Options. View tab. In the Advanced window settings, check 'show hidden files and folders'. While you are at it, uncheck the next line 'hide extensions for known file types'. In otherwords, we DON'T want them hidden. Check 'apply' and close Control Panel.

Open Windows Explorer. Highlight 'My Computer' and highlight Local Disk (usually C:\) In the top menu, File--New--Folder and give it a meaningful name like 'TT backup 8/31'. You should also see another disk showing that represents the tomtom unit. You probably see the tt logo. Highlight it and in the right panel, all the folders and files of the unit are shown. Simply do a Ctl-A (Control-A) which highlights everything. Now, right click and select copy. Now, left click on your new folder you made, right click and select the paste option. Wait a few minutes and that is it! You are done.

Both Mike and Oldboy have given you the answers and for me the fact that ‘Home’ overwrites the previous back-up makes me steer clear of ‘Home’.
With the Windows back-up one can make back-ups as and when necessary. I have a back-up made when the device was new, one made just before and after installing the new map 720 and one made before installing Navcore 8. That means that I can go back to any point that I choose in the safe knowledge that everything will turn out all right.
Its easy to keep backups on DVDs, hard drives or other hardware.

One more disadvantage of using HOME is I think it can't then copy a backup to DVD which is highly recommended. At least you should have a backup out of the box or as early as possible.
