Is this possible? I like the default overspeed bong but it's a bit quiet, I'd like to increase the volume a bit. |

Do you mean the one built into the unit (you don't say which one you are using)? Or are you using a Custom WAV / Mp3 bong? |

Sorry, I thought it was obvious when I said the default one - The one built in to the Nuvi 760 itself.
I was tired after a long weekend working, that's my excuse |

Other than playing with the volume control there is no direct way to do it.
However you can try a Custom Voice Alert from here
Alternatively i also have the bongs from the 760 as MP3 and are set up for the Consolidated database. I can send them to you if you PM me and you can try adjusting the volume in a program such as Audacity and loading those.

you could use ash10's voice file editor thingy-ma-bob, split the voice file, find the 'bongs' edit them to make them louder then repack it all?

Ahah, I shall give MaFt's suggestion a try, I think the default bong is sound 24 so I'll do that and see how it goes.

I tried that (for my C510 that doesn't support Custom Audio). Although I'm certain I changed the correct .wav, it made no difference - it's as though the .vpm isn't actually used for alerts. I assumed that there must be a copy of the alert sound in the firmware somewhere.
It's possible I got the wrong .wav - as anyone else got this technique to work? |

That was the conclusion I came some months back to when I was trying to replace the bong with one of the voice warnings. Nothing in the vpm file seemed to make the slightest difference... _________________ David

did you change to a different voice then back to the one you edited?
i'm pretty certain you need to...

That's correct - the VPM file is only processed when you choose it as a *new* voice.
If you modify the VPM file that is currently selected, you do indeed need to switch to a different voice (any will do, it doesn't matter) and then back again. |

Here's what I've done.
I've extracted the English_British_.vpm file from my Nuvi and used Ash's tool to break it down. I see two files with bongs, sample numbers 24 and 38. There is a double bong on sound 63 but I don't think it's that one.
I dramatically increased the volume of those, combined everything back into one file and copied it back onto my Nuvi. I can see from the datestamp that this is correct. I didn't touch the associated .sum file.
I then switched from the file I normally use (Daniel TTS) to the non TTS one I edited and back to Daniel. Then I went for a drive to one of the local mobile locations (which one can legally approach at 40 from one direction, the camera always points the other way towards the people doing 30) at a speed over 30. All I get is the default volume bong sound.
So I drove past, down a side road and parked up, switched the sound back to the new one I'd just created (the non TTS one) and drove back. Still the same default volume bong.
Now I work in IT and have done for over 20 years so I really don't think I'm doing anything wrong here, but am prepared to accept that it's possible.
To be sure, I'm now copying the English_British_.vpm file back from the Nuvi into a new directory which I'll extract from again and see whether the bongs are my edited ones.
*pause*
Can't do it - I get the "file has already been split/joined" message so I know this is my modified file. |

On the nuvi 760 (and maybe others), the dong speed alert, the dong-dong camera in sight and the ka-schlick (photo sound ) seem to come from the GUPDATE.GCD file. I changed some of them manually. I am in the process of making a tool to modify them, but I have still some issues to resolve.
It is a mystery to me why the dong speed alert sound is both in the VPM (although not used) and GCD files. Most probably a backward/foreward compatibility issue. |

Thanks turbocc, it's good to know that I'm not screwing things up! Looking forward to being able to tweak this bong. |
