|
|
Hi, just wondering if anyone can confirm that the x20 remote control unit will work with the x30 range? I assume it will work because they're both operated by bluetooth rather than radio but if anyone can advise for definite I'd be grateful.
Thanks

A remote control for the x20 range will work just as well when combined with an x30 device - Mike |

The TomTom web site is very confusing on this issue !!
It's very likely that the *20 series remote will work with the *30 units.
If you check the TomTom web site it actually lists the remote as the GO *10 series remote which is almost certainly a mistake.
Also the Bluetooth remote they say is for the *20 series devices, is shown as only compatible with the GO*20 series devices. Seems like they need to get their web pages updated properly !!
I'm sure someone who has the 920 and 930 will be able to clear this up for you.

The x10 remote will not work with either the x20 or x30 product range, I am not too sure what the TomTom web site says on this issue, but it wouldn't be too surprising if it is wrong!
Read my post above re the x20 remote, it works fine with the x30 - Mike |

@Mike
Do you know this from personal experience?
The reason I ask if I have had a negative experience and a funny one.
Negative
I took my x20 remote into Halfords and attempted to pair it with a 730 - wouldn't work. Just to make sure I was following the right procedure, I tried it with a 720 and it worked first time.
Funny
I have just got off the phone with TomTom and was told this
"No it won't work because the x30 uses wireless"
"The x00 and x10 remotes will therefore work with it"
"The reason is that lots of people wanted to use a bluetooth phone aswell as a remote. Bluetooth only lets you pair one device. This is a limitation of the Bluetooth standard, not the TomTom"
When I pointed out that I had paired my phone and remote to my TomTom and I've also had lots of things paired to my laptop I was told quite simplly that I was mistaken as this is not possible.
Cheers,
Nigel |

So why then is the 930 shipped with a bluetooth remote control, I also think you might have discovered why smoking pot is illegal in this country and not so in other parts of Europe!
Bluetooth can and does support multiple devices to be used, I have audio out via Bluetooth, hands free via bluetooth and remote control all connected to the 930 so claiming that it doesn't work is utter rubbish IMHO.
When you tried your 730 with a remote in Halfords was the Bluetooth actually enabled on the TomTom as it is possible to disable it from the preferences options and I am not too sure what the default setting for this actually is i.e. on or off when taken out of the box -Mike |

Just to make one thing clear - I knew TomTom were talking BS, I was just passing on the funny stuff they told me.
When I tried my bluetooth remote with the 730, bluetooth was definitely enabled. I know this because in the first instance I pressed 'search for devices' by mistake and the unit found loads of stuff include my mobile phone.
Once I had cancelled that I followed the process properly but the remote was not detected by the 730.
Just to make double sure I repeated the process many times - each one was unsucessful.
Then to make double double sure I tried the same process against a 720 - my remote was detected in a matter of seconds.
So in Halfords yesterday, my remote would definitely NOT pair with a TomTom 730.
I'm interested in your experiences. Have you definitely managed to use a x20 remote with a x30 TomTom?
Cheers,
Nigel |

The 930 is shipped with a Bluetooth remote though, so it will work with the TT supplied device, I just don't like it as it offers less in way of true functionality

So in answer to the OP's question the answer looks like "NO it doesn't".
I feel that TomTom have been a little petty and vindictive here. The remotes look identical, both working using bluetooth.
I suspect that Bluetooth passes a Device ID which TomTom have set up to be different for the x20 and x30. They have written the x30 firmware so that it will will only respond to the latest remotes.

The reason for this might be that particular 730 was broken.
I ordered 4 x 930 lately and one of them was hardware broken
this way, that the remote could not pair with the devce, and the
results was:
1) remoted locked TomTom
2) remote connected and immediately disconnected
3) remote did not connect to the device at all
Three other devices were ok, and the fault one was immediately
replaced.
My brother is driving the 920 so as soon as I get in touch with him
I might be able to try 930 remote with 920 and vice versa. |

@kichu1979
Thnaksfor the update. It would be great if they do work - I would buy 730 then.
So I would be really grateful if you would keep me posted (via this thread or PM) .
In the meantime, I'll try another retailer and post back my findings.
Some more interesting stuff.
The TomTom website is 'all over the place' and I'm not sure I would rely on it's information without question but this page suggests that you can use the x20 bluetooth remote (although the text against the remote itself is not convincing).

Hi guys, just got my remote control (advertised as for GO720) and it works perfectly with my 730. It paired & connected immediately I switched my 730 on and all functions work exactly as they should.
Incidentally I got it from www.play.com for £21.99 including postage which seemed like a good price. I know it's a GENUINE TomTom product because it took about 2 hours to get the battery cover off! No one other than Tomtom could make it so ridiculously difficult to remove a battery cover!
Anyway thanks all for your help and advice.

Dear Mr Heather,
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support
Your reference for your query is 080519-010046.
You are absolutely right. The remote will definitely work with both devices and they both work via bluetooth signal. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused by being mis-informed.
With Best Regards
