tom tom help really appreciated

hi to everyone
any help would be really appreciated .
i have a tom tom one v3 and i was about to get tom tom updates from the tom tom site using tom tom home . i went to back up the tom tom before i updated it,when it said there was an error downloading the info and it whiped my tom tom clean and didnt even leave any back up files in the back up folder!!
As usual tom tom dont want to know unless i pay £40 and deny it is there fault !!!
i am thinking tom tom do this so on purpose so people have to pay £40 for the maps to be put on again??
has anybody else had this same problem??

If you connect the TT to the PC, can you browse the contents of the TT's memory with Windows Explorer?
Are there any files or folders still there?
