There are new cameras at the northbound bore of Blackwall Tunnel, on the exit slip going to East India Dock Road Westbound.

The ROUGH co-ordinates are N51.51024 W 0.00701 (I haven't been there myself, the details were passed onto me by someone else).

However, When you get to the junction of East India Dock Rd there is a yellow notice saying its an experimental thing and NO enforcement will take place.

To save MaFt extra work, please do not submit these to the database.

I saw these cameras the other day. I didn't see any markings on the road or sensors embedded (a la Monitron) and the cameras are front facing so I presume they are time and distance based. They have IR illuminators but the design of the IR and camera units appears quite different to the SPECS cameras I've seen.

The decision to leave these cameras out of the database unsettles me.

If someone points a camera at me, I get nervous; I like to be warned about it. Maybe the camera is not "live" at this very minute but that doesn't matter. A yellow speed camera is a yellow speed camera and that is as good as live far as I'm concerned. Also, how will we know when the cameras go live? Wait till a few people get caught? Confused

I accept that the sign gives clear evidence that the cameras are not currently used for enforcement but the intention is quite obviously that it will be used for enforcement at sometime in the future otherwise why paint them yellow?

Also, there are loads of other "dummy" cameras out there which are quite obviously not live (ie just empty boxes), yet they are in the database because they could be made live at any time.

I think the team should consider erring on the side of caution and include these new Blackwall Tunnel cameras in the database and let people make their own decision about whether or not they need to check their speed....

Personally, I would agree with Skippy on this. The warnings not only tell you where an active camera may be but also warns you that the driver in front is about to slam the brakes on (even though they were below the limit in the first place Rolling Eyes ).

Granted it won't shut up going down the M42 if this was the case but I would rather have false positives than false negatives.

I also agree with the last two posts.

I also passed through these cameras last week and a lot of nervous drivers were looking at them and breaking heavily.

I agree with skippy -

these should be added to the database.

May be they could be added to the pmobiles untill more is known, but they should be in there somewhere.

I have submitted an "old" mobile camera position as being "dead", that was once in in good position in a lay by, but now 99% unlikely to be returned by a van due to the road being rebuilt (with no layby) into a new carriageway, but that is still in the database although practically useless, the Blackwall cameras are much more important.

I'm sorry but I disagree. The database is complex enough as it is without cluttering it up with test cameras, dummies and other sites that are not active.

If we do as is suggested here it will open a can of worms, where do we draw the line? Do we add fake Gatso's built out of cardboard? Some people will slam their brakes on if they see a guy in a yellow jacket or any white van parked at the kerb. The database is and always will be a record of live cameras and active mobile sites only.

If we receive a report of a camera that we know not to be live, or know to be installed for testing then it won't be included. I'll give anyone who gets prosecuted by a dummy camera lifetime membership on production of the ticket Wink

I still think they should go in but I accept your decision - you're the boss! I just thought I'd ask so the situation could be clarified.

As a compromise, how about a single topic in this forum (maybe a "sticky") where people can report this sort of thing WITH Co-ordinates (no vague "on the A99 near Anytown" descriptions).
Then, any one who wants to add them to their own SatNav's warnings can do so.

Sound sensible?

I have no issue with that. I'll sort out a topic and make it sticky tomorrow unless anyone else wants to start the ball rolling in which case I will make that a sticky tomorrow Very Happy

Hmm......... A poi category of locations you know you will not get prosecuted if speeding, what voice warning are we going to have for that Andy? - I have some sound recordings of jet fighter aircraft taking off if they might be of use! - Mike

I was thinking of paraphrasing a Clint Eastwood quote:

"This camera might be live or it might be testing. So ya gotta ask yourself: Do I feel lucky? Well, punk. Do ya?"
