I'm looking to purchase a bluetooth GPS so that I can use my symbian phone to navigate urban streets on foot when i'm away on business - London, Maidenhead, Manchester, Birmingham etc. I've got a car based GPS and will be using this one for treading the streets only! Choices I have at a local retailer are:

A) 44ch / SkyTraq Venus 5 / -158db
B) 20ch / Sirf Star 3 / -159db
C) 51ch / Atmel ANTARIS 4 / -155db
D) 32ch / MTK GPS / -158db

When using in a built up area, what should I go for - more channels, higher sensitivity or should I plump for the sirfstar III chipset - has anyone had any experience of the other chipsets?

Any advice gratefuly received - Thanks in advance. Very Happy

Best advice is to stick to a known brand and one with either SiRFStarIII (SSIII) or Mediatek (MTK) chipsets.

Brands such as Globalsat, Holux, ZyCast, RoyalTek are known and respected.

Do you have software on your phone already?

No one laugh, but I bought a 6630 (CHEAP!) from a mate who has recently upgraded to N95 8GB, tom tom on phone, but he cannot find the TT gps unit, so looking to pick up a substitute.

I have heard that as there are only 20 or so satellites available at any one time, there is little point to having a 51 channel receiver and would be better off looking for a higher sensitivity.

Any views?

51 channel claims are just marketing BS, as I said, go for a SSIII or MTK chipset equipped receiver and you'll get as good a result as is possible currently reception wise.

And there are only 12 maximum in view from any point on the Earth's surface (the rest are shielded by the Earth)
