Upgrading a Batch of GO 910 units

Hi,
We have a batch of 12 GO910 units at work.
For reasons of security, the company I work for has a policy of forbidding the TomTom devices from being connected to a PC on the network. This means that any updates via TT Home are not possible at work ( also the company firewall prevents Home from accessing the Internet - I'm told).

If one of the GO910 units were to be taken home and upgraded on a PC, what would be involved in copying the newer application versions onto the remaining units to upgrade them ?

Is it simply a question of copying all the files in the root directory or is there more to it than that ?

There is more to this than just the root directory files, certain files within folders are also updated (but not files within any single folder, its a sort of "pick and mix").
You can use Home to update a single device and stored on the PC in the TomTom Home Downloads directory will be the update on the PC, this will be in the form of a CAB file, it can be opened and then you manually copy the files to their correct location (get it wrong and you will mess up the device) - it might be easier to do this over 12 separate nights via Home depending upon how proficient you are with a PC - Mike

Although I think you can update SOFTWARE of any unit using just one login to Home, it might be worth setting up 12 individual accounts (i.e. 12 email addresses) so that any other updates can be done too.

DennisN is the expert on multiple email accounts for Home!

Just jumping in here, but could you not simply update one. Then take a backup of everything excluding the map folders and then copy that to the other units?

Don't forget these are 910 devices, there are files within the LoqundoTTS folder that get updated and that is around 4GB, copying that lot to 12 devices is a rather tiresome task - Mike

Perhaps but easier than logging in 12 devices and updating individually which would require the OP talking all of them home?

They could at least then be updated in the office if a suitable standalone PC was available using the master image.

If you locate the update CAB file on your PC after the update of a single machine, look in TomTom Home/ Preferences/ Folder Preferences and see what the "Downloads" folder path is, use Windows Explorer to go to the downloads folder and identify the CAB file, double click it and it will open to display like this:

The important part is the Path tab to the right of the screen capture, if this is blank the corresponding file goes into the root of the 910's drive, where it says "fleetcd\" these 3 files go into the fleetcd, 3 files for the "bin" folder, 1 for the "gns" folder, the LoquendoTTS\lib" path needs you to open the LoquendoTTS folder then the lib folder within it. - Mike

Are you just updating the application, or do you need to do the map too? If you're updating the map, you'll need to do that with each device through HOME, and create a new email account for each device.

Do you need to maintain individual settings on each device, or can they all be wiped clean and set up the same?

I find when I have to do a batch that it's much faster to do just one via HOME then copy everything (except the map folder) to my PC, then copy it all to each new TomTom.

This is MUCH faster with any of the devices that use an SD card (use a card reader instead of plugging the TT into the PC), and kind of a toss-up for HD-based units, depending on how many/what you need to update.

The real problem at the moment is that the 910's are loaded with version 6.??
It seems that this has caused a problem on a number of devices that get that "won't power up" problem if they get un-docked inadvertently. I understand that the version 7.?? system fixed that issue (according to the FAQ's on TT web support).

Updating the maps is probably of secondary importance to us at the moment but maybe a requirement in future.

One of the units was updated a few nights ago by one of my colleagues so we do have a starting point to copy from right now.

Just wondering how the units retain their unique identity when you copy all the files over ? is the serial number we see on the barcode linked to the hard drive serial number or something Question

The files associated with updates to the OS are not locked to any specific device, neither do they have anything to do with map activation. Map activation/ upgrades is where you would have to use TomTom Home and (in this case 12 e-mail addresses - what a stupid system Crying or Very sad

) if you want version 7,x on the units just download it and copy the files to each unit in turn.
I would seriously recommend you take a full backup of each device BEFORE upgrading it (just in case) for all 12 units that will require around 100GB of space though! - Mike

Looks like the purchase of a USB Hard Drive with at least 100 GB might be a good backup solution.

Sorry to sound stupid but which files do you think would be the ones we'd need to copy between devices JUST for the upgrade from Version 6 to version 7 Question

The post I made earlier shows the files associated with the upgrade to 7,161 the files for a different version might differ, if you can let me know what version you are trying to upgrade the device to I will make a similar screen capture for the specific version you are using - Mike
