|

I am trying to understand how memory is utilised in my 720. Most of the available internal 2g of memory is used up by the Western European map, leaving very little of any add on's such as other maps, mp3 and audio files. I had inserted an SD memory card with mp3 files into the unit hoping that it will be able to play them, but I seam to have no way of accessing the memory card.
From the question & answers I have read it appears that the device can only use either internal or external memory, but not both (please confirm).
If this is the case, it I choose to extend my memory usage greater then 2g do I need to install a larger SD memory card (say 4g) and using TomTom Home2 first backup the internal memory to a PC and then restore this backup onto the SD memory card.
So that with the SD memory installed the unit will now bootup using the application and maps on the memory card, but now giving me plenty of memory for any add on's. With the memory card removed does the unit then return to its normal mode of booting up from internal memory?
Thankyou for anyone who can help me |

Welcome to the forum, an SD card when inserted to the 720 is used as additional storage for maps, music etc. you do not need to put any files from the 720 internal memory on the card for it to work.
Have you put the music mp3 files into a folder named "mp3" (without the "") And this mp3 folder needs to be in the root of the memory card, that is the highest level you can see on the card. - Mike |

Thanks for your help
I have realised my error: I recompiled my record collection a couple of months ago using the wma format. Now after using a mp3 format the unit can now see and play the music files on the SD memory.
But as an added backup, can a backup made to PC be restored to a SD memory card.
Any other tips on using SD memory are welcome |

Yes you can put the full backup on the storage card, when the TomTom boots up it looks at the card first, if it finds the application present it will automatically use it ignoring the application on the memory. Maps, Music and pictures can reside in either storage location and the device will use them all.
As for any other tips, make sure the card you use is a high speed version and whilst the x20 units will support SDHC they only currently reliably work up to 4GB. I use an 8GB card in my device, others have reported success with 16GB cards, but you have to use a card reader to put information on the card, the TomTom won't act as a card reader while connected to the PC if the capacity is over 4GB - Mike |
