Hi Everyone,

My PDA's screen got smashed last week, so after a bit of reading I decided to go for a dedicated unit instead. I rarely use the PDA for anything other than Satnav anyway. I can always get another PDA at another time if needs be at a later date.

I opted for the Go 720 as it is loaded with great features, I did look at other makes from Garmin etc, however all I have ever used on the PDA is Tomtom, so I know it well.

I read back through the forums while I was waiting for it to arrive just to see if there was anything that I needed to know. The information is excellent and I learned a lot from the postings so a big thanks for that.

I backed up my device (to two different locations for peace of mind) as soon as I attached it to my PC. I installed the latest version of Home and updated the device and was relieved that it all went smoothly, the application and the map updated to the latest versions. I must admit I was a little worried about this after reading about some of the serious problems that some were having. The new map of Western Europe only took 12 minutes to download, although I do have a 20Mb connection.

I done a full backup again after the updates for total peace of mind and started to configure all of my Speed camera updates and system settings.

Thanks to the clear and accurate FAQ's on the forums, everything is setup correctly exactly as stated. I did have a minor issue with the custom audio warnings, but that was quickly resolved after disabling Tomtoms own camera alerts.

I then backed up the completed configured device. (I'm pretty thorough Laughing )

So I am all setup and ready to go, it wouldn't have gone so smoothly without the advice on the forum. So THANK YOU all again for the great advice Cool Very Happy

Brilliant to get some positive feedback! I read your post waiting for the "but..." and it never came! Laughing

Lucky you with the map download... Took me nearly four hours and I'm supposed to be on 4MB

Welcome to the forum, it makes a refreshing change for someone to post saying they have followed the advice available on here, and more importantly performed a series of backups along the way, well done and enjoy the device - Mike

Nope no buts at all Laughing

I was half expecting the map download to take several hours, after reading back through the posts. I'm being completely honest in saying that it only took 12 minutes.

Thanks for the welcome Mike Very Happy

I believe in regular backups, I'm a Senior system specialist and I'm always telling my customers to back up properly and regularly.

I know Tomtom very well having used it on my PDA for many years, so I had a head start. However the advice here was great and helped the setup go as smooth as silk.

Hi Unholymoondog
My Gawd! When I read your bit about your map download speed I nearly pulled my hair out. I live at the end of the line and if I managed to download at 500 Kbps I would be so excited that I would break out the champagne.

I apologise to everyone for downloading the maps so fast. I put an SD card in last night, changed the device to external and downloaded the map again to see if it was a fluke. It took 13 minutes this time, still not bad for over 1.5Gb of data.

I have hit one snag and that is to do with the map share data problem that a few people are having. It says no updates found, even though it's 23 weeks out of date. I've tried it on two different PC's one with Vista and one with XP and the problem is the same on both, so I would say that it is a server related problem. No surprises there. I don't want to go off topic so it's the last that I will post about this in this thread. If I find any other info I will post it in the relevant thread.

Thanks again for the welcome and apologies to Trevor for downloading the map so fast Laughing Out Loud
