Hi, I am just wondering if it would be a good idea to have separate lists for Gatso and Truvelo. I would have thought that a Truvelo needs more warning as it faces you.

In other words, yes that is an idea, but if they produced every different version that you could think of (red light split into speeds? temp section split up and merged into the "fixed" sections? etc.) they'd never get the database out on time, if at all!
But, there is nothing to stop you creating the seperate files yourself with a utility like POI edit. Simply load each "Gatso" file (20,30,40,50,60,70,tba if you are using the speed zoned set) into POIEdit one at a time, then click the name column to sort the list alphabetically and you can then split the list into as many sections as you like using normal copy and paste or delete, then "save as" with new names. (You'll obviously need a new set of icons for the new files too). |

It's also worth considering that a Truvelo takes your photo at a range of about 10m so in practice it makes little difference if they have their own database. You really should be setting warning of 300m+
Also Truvelo can operate in dual mode with front facing for approaching traffic and the ability to take rear facing shots of traffic on the opposite carriageway.

Thanks for your replies. I thought this may be the case. I've already separated Truvelo from Gatsos ( just for the excercise, as I'm having a new Garmin and I want to find my way around it ! )
Regarding the Truvelo taking a photo at 30 m. Has it, by then, detected that you're over the speed limit?

So if it takes a picture at 10m and knows youre over the limit how far away can it detect you ?

At about 10m! Truvelo uses piezo strips in the carriageway which trigger the camera.
Following the sensor strips is a band of three white lines painted across the carriageway. The Truvelo photo will actually show your vehicles front wheels centered on the white lines having measured your speed a split second before. This is used as a secondary check to confirm which vehicle is the guilty one should there be more than one in the photo.

This is the point I was making. Realisticly, you need more warning when approaching a Truvelo.
I've separated my Gatso/Truvelo file and intend to give the Truvelo 100 yards more that a Gatso.
Am I going 'over the top' ! or does that sound reasonable ?

It measures your speed and takes your picture at 10m. If your warning are so late that 10m makes a difference then you need to change them ALL!

10 yards for every ten miles per hour gives aprox. 20 seconds warning. That's ample for Truvelo or Gatso.
Don't forget, if you split all the files in two this time, you'll have to do it again in a fortnight and every time there's a new release of the database. |

Andy. Surely your rule of thumb should be 10yd for every 1 MPH
so for 60MPH
60MPH = 88ft/sec X 20 = 1760ft = 1/3 mile = approx 600 yds
otherwise the warning is at 60 yards for 60MPH, a bit close?  |

What I meant to say was set the distance to ten TIMES your speed... in yards. |

Truvelo cameras also have Type Approval for rear-facing application... |
