City GPS Navigation for Walking

Hi, im going to New York in about a month, and ill be taking my GPS enabled PDA.

Ive got TomTom 6 currently, but dont know if this will be the best thing to use to navigate the city.

Are there JUST city maps available for TT6 - as i dont really want to buy the whole of the USA map?
Is there another application i can use, just incase i get lost?

Was thinking about just getting a mapping software - like pocket street, But id like the functionality to have the GPS enabled so i actually know where i am.

Until end of Jan you can get New England & Mid Atlantic for £29.95 or (even better deal) Whole of US & Canada for £34.95. Deal finishes after this date and prices virtually double.

I would suggest that any other solution is going to be similarly priced or even a lot more. Plus you get to use an application you are familiar with.

In any event make sure you have a SiRF III receiver (or very similar) to work well in NY - the home of urban canyons!

Would i need that receiver even if i have GPS built into my iPaq.
I guess because of all the builsings the signal may well be poor.

If i dont need 1, how good will the signal be anyway with/without?

Trip is already costing a bit, another £50 would be pretty harsh.

I don't know what GPS receiver is in your iPaq. It probably isn't worth worrying about a new receiver specifically for this trip. Just bear in mind that in some places a signal will be difficult to get and will possibly lead to errors in position - but nothing that should worry you on foot. Enjoy the trip! My limited experience of New York leads me to recommend taxis as a good way of getting about!
