TomTom ONE won't boot unless SD card removed

The device is fully charged and up to date with version 7.161 installed but despite working OK up to date it has now refused to work until the SD card is removed.

I've tried starting with the pin in but it's totally dead unless I remove the SD card.

This problem sounds familiar but my searching has not currently found a solution so maybe someone with a better memory will take pity on me
