|
|
Just looking on the TomTom website to purchase the new maps and the map size for the XL is 953MB and the map size for the Go's is 1785MB.
It's just a just a query really but is there any reason for the difference in size??
Cheers. |

Mainly that the larger ones have text to speech files included. |

So are the maps basically the same? Some say the larger file size maps have more details such as lakes and green spaces marked (although to be honest that wouldn't take up that much space). Does the text to speech data take up that much extra memory?

That's why I said "mainly".
Certainly there have been examples shown here and other forums where "crinkles" have been straightened out, and water features, green spaces and even the occasional small road have been left off one map version and not on another.
But I didn't go into detail, because to be honest, I've lost track of which versions that discussion was about (I THINK the one I remember was the W Europe map which was made to fit in units with 1GB internal memory compared to the W+C Europe), but it's all in the forum if you care to look back. |

A few days ago,i decided to risk, and bought the WE(1785mb) for my One v2(website not Home).
No problems at all.
Even after deleting the "csspeech" files(One v2 doesn´t use them)the size is 1.42gb!
No doubt Tomtom is throwing away detail and minor roads in the 950mb version. |

Found this posting via a Search so....just been thinking about taking advantage of TT's 'up to 50% off' offer, which means that rather than updating just my original UK map, I'm tempted by the WE map. I've also been puzzled by the choices offered me on the TT map purchase web site; if I confess to having a TT1 v1, clearly it thinks I only need/deserve to be offered the approx 1Gb map, but if I lie and say I have a 920 or similar, I'm offered the 1.8Gb version. The information above implies that TextToSpeech only takes up approx 0.4Gb, so I'm guessing we're seeing a re-run of the '1Gb version is the less-detailed poor cousin of the 'full' version', which I believe was a hot topic for previous versions of these maps.
Can anyone confirm that the TTS file set really is only 0.4Gb?
And can anyone confirm the amount of detail that's missing in the 1Gb version? After all, 70% of the 'full' represents a significant reduction in....well, something.
Assuming I have, say, a 2Gb card, previous info elsewhere on this forum (thanks to all!) suggest I'll have no problem installing the larger map. Given the relatively low price of SD cards now, why settle for the smaller map? _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

There seems to be a bit of confusion with the TTS files.
No map comes with TTS files.
The TTS files come with the unit itself and in the cd supplied.
The cspeech files are for voice imput adresses.
The WE with 1785mb comes with a crpoi file(more details in the poi),with 50mb,and comes with a cphoneme file with 45mb(probably to be used on units with hands free calls).
So if you take away those 2 files, and cspeech files you end up with +1300mb of data.
400mb more!!
No doubt in my mind that Tomtom is throwing away data on the 900mb version. |

Thanks fa091 for the clarification of the 'non-map' file types and sizes.
There's been a fair few posts discussing the, er, merits of TTHome. Is there a way of downloading the WE (or any) map and installing without using TTHome? - seems a shame to exclude our Linux brethren from the joys of TT ownership.
If not, has anyone had success download/installing using Mac OSX? _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

Found this link in another posting which is for version 1.6 of Tom Tom Home for OSX which isn't the same as the one offered by the Tom Tom web-site (I think that is currently version 1,5). This seems to have the ability to use the Map Share functions and also to purchase and install the latest maps (although I haven't tested that out).

Thank you. I looked for ages on the TT website but couldn't find this (was looking for v2 initially until I realised that they haven't ported it to Mac). |
