|
I decided it was time for another Tomtom since my inventory only contained an HP2210 PDA with Tomtom 6 (upgraded from 2-3-5-6) and a classic GO, and I wanted the RDS TMC module. Was all set for a ONE but I realized they don't have an SD slot any more, and I guess the maps will get bigger over time. The classic GO came with UK maps on a 128MB SD card, and it now has a 2GB card in it with the latest WE maps, so I'd like that flexibility in the future. So an XL it was...
Anyway, it's a nice bit of kit although the screen refresh is slower than the classic GO (I think the GO uses the ASN to interpolate between updates?) But the mounting solution sucks. The classic GO you just clip onto the mount, and can connect the mount to the fag lighter. This evening I couldn't actually attach the ONE XL to the mount because it was dark -- I had to get a torch out to get the power and TMC connected!
What's the consensus on active mounts? I have two problems: (1) which active mount to choose -- I've seen the Brodit and Carcomm ones, but only on the Internet, not in real life, and (2) how to mount it to the car. For (1) it looks to me like the Brodit mount still requires the TMC module to be plugged into the Tomtom separately, which negates the effectiveness of an active mount. For (2), it appears that the selection of Brodit Proclips for my car (BMW Z4 M Coupe) is limited to ones that mount either side of the transmission tunnel. Ideally I'd like it either by the A-pillar or on top of the middle of the console (where the £1600 BMW GPS would have been had I specc'd it). If it's possible to do elegantly I'd also rather hardwire it than use the fag lighter socket.
Anyone with any thoughts on either of these problems? |

(1) I don't know if you've seen this thread (the 1st post contains the link to the review). If you follow the thread, you'll see that when they 1st released the n20 mount, it was without the TMC fitting, but added it later. They may be willing to do the same for the XL _________________ Jock

I like the Brodit mounts. I've also just received Carcomm's active mount for the x20's which although bulkier is much nicer to use and looks more like a factory fit cradle.
I'll be posting a review soon. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hey thanks BGF, I read that review before but for some reason it implied to me that there was just a hole for the TMC cable and you had to plug it in each time. Now I can see that the cable is clipped into place so you can leave it permanently attached to the mount.
Looking forward to that review Darren... |
