Handheld for USA and UK

My daughter is off to Scotland for 6 months to Edinburgh University, and I want to get her a hand held GPS that will work in USA and UK (rest of Europe would be great too). Any recommendations?

You have not listed a specific set of requirements. Does she want / need Topographical mapping, Street mapping, turn by turn instructions and routing?. Is size important, features such as real time traffic and bluetooth etc. What about price; how much does she want to spend - or maybe more importantly, how much can she afford to spend?

Some more information on what problems she wants to solve with the GPS would enable us to provide some specific advise. Also price is a big factor any decision, whats yours?

Thanks for your questions to my questions! I am very new at this world of GPS.

Emma Jean will be in Scotland for a semester of school in Edinburgh, taking her field classes in Archaeology. She would want a handheld GPS to help her find her way around the new cities she wants to visit (London, Paris, Amsterdam). She will not be driving. Street maps for her walks will be more important to her, and turn by turn directions would be great. Bluetooth accesibility and traffic updates are not important. If she downloads info. into the device, she will be doing so through her Mac G4 laptop.

It would be great if I could find something for less than $300. There are alot of holiday sale on right now. Also, do I need to buy lots of additional software, info for the device that would drive up the price?

I think most of the GARMIN nuvi range have a pedestrian mode - important for walking direction as it ignores no-entry/one-way streets etc.

Have a look at the low-end 200 / 300 systems - should be able to get these for a decent price. Suggest you get full European mapping - it's the cheapest way of getting what she will need. She will be able it use it in a car also - even if it's only a friends to start with!
