Er How?
Ideally making it easy to reload when I cock it up

From a file system point of view - WYSIWYG ... you can copy the files off and if need-be , you can copy 'em back on again. Being positively middle-aged, I use "XCOPY /E" ,but I understand that Windows Explorer can copy files as well ;-)
You can't backup the firmware as such, only the various firmware loaders. The main unit firmware lives in GUPDATE.GCD -- the others in various .BIN/.GCD files. It is possible to downgrade the main firmware and the bluetooth firmware, but not other stuff, so no going back with things like SiRF, once upgraded.
