Hi
I used to have two maps - GB and France. Each has its own MapSettings.cfg file.

I have replaced both with Western Europe map. I want all my favourites etc in the new map but importing MapSettings.cfg from GB map only gives me GB favourites. How can I merge the two files from the GB and France maps to create a new MapSettings.cfg for the new WE map?

I searched Forums but could no reference to editing or merging them (except for one unanswered question about editing the MapSettings.cfg file)

Hope this is possible

Thanks,
George

Two possible ways:

1. You could TRY this...
The latest version of POI Edit can also open the .cfg files. ('Open' the first and then 'append' the second). Obviously as the file names are the same, you need to be careful which folders you are using.
However, once you've merged them, I'm not sure if it will then re-save the result as a .cfg. You appear to be able to do a SAVE (which, if it DOES save as .cfg will obviously overwrite one of the originals), but if you SAVE AS... it doesn't give you .cfg as one of the file format options.
You can, of course save the result as a normal POI file.
I have not tried this myself, so you need to have GOOD BACKUPS before you start experimenting.

2. If all you want to do is merge your favourites, it might be easier and safer to use the TomTom itself to simply convert them all to POIs and then use POI edit to merge the two POI categories together.

To do that on the machine, first go to Change preferences/ manage POIs and create a new POI category (call it "UK_Favs" or whatever).
Now, go: Add POI/ select your new category / From Favourite / select the first in your list / and OK.
Repeat for all the favourites in that map and then swap maps and do the whole thing again for the other map, calling your POI category France_Favs or similar.
A bit time consuming, but as I think you are restricted to 48 favourites anyway, it doesn't take TOO long.

Once you have your two new POI categories, it is then easy to merge them with POI Edit as in (1) above, saving it as a new POI category to import into your new Europe map folder.

Finally, you can either leave them as POIs, or reverse the procedure (Add Favourite / from POI) to get them back to Favourites (not forgetting the limit of 48!)

Hope that all makes sense!

Andy
Method 2 all done - thanks very much.

I'll have a whinge while I am here - Favourites only ever displays 2 or 3 per page depending on keyboard size configured, because there is not a 'no keyboard' option. And if one keeps favourites as a POI category, there is no keyboard so there are 6 to a screen - great, but they are listed by distance, not alphabetically. You'd have thought TT would have offered a 'no keyboard' option in Favourites by now.

Grrrrr.

They do...

If you keep your favourites below a certain number (12 or less), you get the full screen "6-to-a-page" display.

If you go above that number and you get the "two entries plus keyboard" display, then just tap the down arrow at top left and the keyboard vanishes, leaving you with 6 to a page again (Alphabetical).

All this is on v7, can't remember if it is the same on v6...

On my v6, with 12 or less, you get the 6 to a page list and can call up the keyboard by tapping Find. With more than 12, you get the 2 to a page + keyboard. I don't see any arrow top left, only the list scrolling up/down arrows.

Yep - I am on v6 and can confirm there is no arrow to hide keyboard - and I do have many more than 12 favourites.

Seems Nanny TomTom thought she knew best and decided that remembering what you called a favourite and then finding its first letter on a keyboard was quicker than scrolling to a third screen, or more. I guess it took her a while to realise quite a lot of people might have more than 12 favourites and be a bit frustrated by her dictates.

Must check about moving to v7 on a TT500...

George, Just to save you wasting any time looking for a V7 update, it is not available as yet - perhaps at some future point TomTom will make the new software available, keep an eye on the forum though as I am sure you will find out when it becomes available this way - Mike

Thanks, Mike.

So Nanny TomTom is still tapping her foot and stroking her chin wondering if her kiddies are grown-up enough to make choices for themselves.

Typical. :-)

Here are the screens I was referring to on v7 software.

First is what you see when you first go to the favourites list, second is what you get after tapping the arrow next to the two entries.
