Garmin Etrex Legend Cx and Memory Map

Total newbie at this, have searched but still not entirely sure, seem to be getting conflicting info.
I have just purchased above GPS unit from USA, am a UK resident. I have memory map at home. I saw a terrible review of Garmin Topo GB on Amazon, is this justified? I want the GPS for hillwalking, cycling along trails and general countryside walking.
And exactly how do I transfer memory map info onto the Garmin unit? Is it not possible to use this as the base maps? And if not is Topo the only option????

It is not possible to load MemoryMap (or any similar product) onto GARMIN mapping GPS units. You can only load specific GARMIN MapSource mapping.

The TOPO UK gets 'panned' because most UK walkers are used to using OSGB mapping (1:25k) which is by far the best topo mapping available anywhere in the world (well I've not found anything comparable yet ). Although I haven't used it there have been numerous reviews and notes about missing tracks etc.

Okay,
so it sounds like buying the Topo is my only option??
From other posts I have read I see uploading routes onto their garmins from memory map, is it a case of drag and drop once i have the topo installed??
