What do I need please help

Hello,
I hope someone can help me I am looking to buy a gps pda for walking and some green lane driving so the unit will not really be needed for road tom-tom type navigation strictly off road OS map stuff.
I have tried emailing companies that sell these units on flea-bay but they don’t seem to know or care if you don’t want to “buy it now”.
What I need to know is what software will I need to use OS type maps and does the unit just detect the gps signal or does it have active navigation software built in like say my old garmin etrex legend, also could I load my Memorymap central region maps to the PDA ????
Any help very gratefully received

Welcome to the forum, Memory Map will load to the PDA and works very well, do you have a PDA at the moment, if so which one and do you have a GPS receiver to accompany it - If you are looking to purchese a PDA and GPS then there a lot of very good suitable systems and options available but mostly this will depend upon your available budget - Mike

Thanks for your reply. I don’t have one at the moment just a Garmin Etrex Legend but I want one because the map detail of the topo GB on the garmin is not really good enough for what I want for instance byways etc.
I would like to spend about £200ish on a unit but perhaps a bit more.
Would I need any navigation software other than the Memorymap program?
Perhaps one of those Mio Digiwalkers that have an integrated ariel?
The Mio p550 I think has Bluetooth and wifi so I suppose that’s got to be useful for loading maps from the pc.
Any thoughts on this model as they seem to get reviews ranging from awful to excellent?

There are lots of different applications you can use with a PDA and GPS, but if you already have Memory Map I would start out by using that, it is a very capable program once you get used to what it can offer you, have a read through some of the posts in the Memory Map forum section for a few tips.

For hardware you won't go too far wrong with the P550, a mate of mine from work uses one with Memory Map installed and thinks it is a great device. With a budget as low as you have to play with you will be hard pushed to purchase anything other than a P550 to stay within limits, although if you can live without WiFi and Bluetooth you could consider the P350.
To load maps and communicate with the PC you will use a direct wired connection so unless you intend needing WiFi or BT for something else I would save some cash - Mike
