Laptop Uses?

I can see the usefulness of using a laptop gps in the car but are there any other practical uses for a laptop gps?

Two related questions:

1) For marine use, would the laptop have to have an external (BT or mouse) receiver?

2) In what situations can a laptop that has a CF GPS attached directly into the CF slot be used? For instance, if it were in an automobile, wouldn't the CF GPS need to be near a window?

It certainly helps if you have an external GPS antenna, GPS mouse or BT receiver but if you have a fibreglas cockpit then you should find reception is OK even without.
A PCMCIA/CF GPS will always be less efficient without an external antenna (the better models have ext antenna options) in a laptop due to the position of the PCMCIA slot which is not ideal. Outdoors it would be fine.

erm - just an observation wrt outdoors hiking use. Perhaps even for outdoors guides? Take a group on a trek - print out the map, provide 3d cross sections, ... it is merely limited by our collective and individual inspirations.
