I have spent hours upon hours trying to decide which option would be best for me regarding a gps solution. I drive probably 30k miles with work and was looking for a decent gps/address piece of kit. My problem is I can figure out if a dedicate gps box like the Garmin SP 2610 would be best or a setup with a pda (HP5500 or the like) and a gps receiver. I've read countless reviews etc and am still no further in making a choice. Are the pda's as stable/plan routes as well as the dedicated boxes?

Thanks in advance to any help...good job I'm bald already as I could've pulled my hair out by now! :D

With a PocketPC based solution you can evaluate what you have and get something else (some other software) if need be. With the Garmin you are stuck - good if you like it, bad if you don't. Can you test drive it?

I think after last night searching for info I have decided to get a PPC setup rather than a dedicated device. Now, as I'm new to the handheld world, I could do with a little advice on which to go for..

the 5550 has caught my eye but some reviews say although it's a high end bit of kit, the 2210 does better in some areas...?

I thought maybe the new navman 4410 bundle or a Fortuna clip on with some (not sure) software for it.

Thanks again for any help!

Recently more folks were using the iPAQ 4150 because it also has WLAN (the 2210 doesn't). The advantage of the 2210 is that it has both CF and SD slots.

Both devices have a bit of a weak speaker. My personal favorite is and stays the 3970. Excellent screen, LOUD speaker, BT, SD, plenty of RAM. You may be able to get it cheap from eBay

tbh, I'd prefer to buy new so I knew what milage its done. would a CF sleeve and plenty of ram make it preferable over the 221x?

If you plan on using BT receiver then you don't really need the CF sleeve. You can put the maps onto the SD card. But yes, plenty of RAM certainly doesn't hurt either.

yes, I was planning on using a BT receiver. I read somewhere (possibly on here) about SD cards not loading maps as fast as CF cards..was that a manufacturer compatibility problem or a bug?

Damn, so much to take into account isn't there!

As most of my work is address to address (sometimes with numbers, always with postcodes) would SmartST Pro be better than Tomtom as it stands at the mo'?

This is the idea I have to setup..
ipaq 5550 possibly with CF sleeve and a nice chunk of ram
either: Fortuna BT clip on with Tomtom or SmartST Pro
or the new Navman GPS4410 bundle (this wouldn't limit you to SmartST would it?)

Sorry for all the Q's but I know there's plenty of experience on here! Smile
