Hi,

Hopefully I have posted this in the right area! Just a quick and simple question, I'm new with GPS's and I thought once you baught them you would get free map updates. However, for my Garmin I have been unable to find any free ones. Can anyone tell me of a place where I should be looking. Looked at Garmin's website and you can buy maps on CD, Card, etc.

Any help Rolling Eyes

Welcome. You will have the latest maps(Version 9) on the unit , the next update will be towards the end of the year but you will have to pay for this, about £40. Probably worth updating in a couple of years, they don't change that much. Best to go to the Garmin Streetpilot and Nuvi forum here.

ok thanks. Have you got the web url where the update will be because the official Garmin site is confusing, maybe just me.

But technology wise, things get cheaper and cheaper, so I can see the time where maps are more expensive then GPS's!

This Page will contain any software updates for your device, I would keep an eye on the forum as once new maps are released they get quite a lot of coverage - Mike

Bhogal - the mapping data providers (Tele Atlas and Navteq) charge a fee to the likes of TomTom and Garmin for every map, or map update supplied to a customer. As such, no one provides map updates for free (simply because they can't, else the cost of the original unit would be double).

However, Garmin provide free software updates when they fix bugs / add new functionality. You've already been pointed to the URLs for that.

I got you. One thing I don't get about the Sat Nav is that sometimes it will take me a longer way than one I know of, whatever setting I choose (quickest/shortest). For example, from the pub, my house is stright down the road. Garmin tells me to take a left, next right, right again, left....which is same way but round the block! Huh Rolling Eyes I don't understand how that works as the straight road is clearly on the GPS and is clearly quicker even with heavy traffic...because there never is any down my road, even though it is a main road it constantly is moving.

There is a setting to allow U tuns on the Garmin device, it could be this that is causing the strange routing, difficult to say without knowing the exact location though.
If you know better than the device simply ignore it and it will catch up with what you are doing. At the end of the day it still gets you to your destination either way - Mike

True I guess, did get me to wales ok, which I was happy about. I doubt if the U turns are effecting it, because there is no need for a U turn anyway.

Still will see in future travels :P

Does the direct road have a 30mph limit and the roads the Garmin takes you on have the national limit? The assumption seems to be that you will be doing 60mph on unrestricted roads, so using them will be faster!

No road limits are all 30mph, even the way Garmin takes me.

it might. if it's not sure of your current direction (i.e. only just got a satellite fix and you've not set off yet) it may assume you are facing a different way - try seeting it to allow u-turns and see if it makes a difference.

I have tried it several occasions, however I have not yet tried it without the U turns option on, so will do so.
