Has anyone attempted to modify the cigarette power supply or fitted a separate power feed for a nuvi?

Its just that my cigarette socket is in a flip down ash tray and the adapter sticks out towards my gear stick, and the wires waving about.

Im hoping for a more permanent and hidden fitting but dont know whether the plug end had some sort or transistor/transformer type thing in it?

Would my best bet be one of those multisocket cigarette plugs on a bit of extension wire extended behind the dash somewhere, or is i ok to cut into the garmin cable and connect it to the battery?

I have a spare power cable from my old i3.

An additional lighter socket behind the dash is the way to do it.

Hi Kevo85,

Get into the back of your existing wiring behind the cig' lighter point , normally accessable by removing the ashtray, then you can add an extra socket.

Halford's now sell cig' lighter's with lot's of extra cable, find the one required, albeit single double etc. Work out where the new socket is to go, measure the minimum amount of cable required on the new point, cut off the male end, (the bit that goes into the normal female cig' lighter) and splice the two supplied cables into the existing cables, (behind the existing cig' lighter) making sure any exposed wires are insulated.

This "extra" female socket can be hidden under the dash, (make sure you can get access if required later) fit securely with cable ties. Remember if you depend on looking at power and TMC lights, on the male end plug, these could be now hidden.

Now plug in the existing Sat Nav cable into the new socket as you would have done before.
If you are clever at hiding cables around the dash - you get a Sat Nav fitted with no cables showing, but remember give yourself enough cable and space to unplug the Sat Nav and mount when not required.

Some Sat Nav's have voltage reducers and regulators, most have fuses - so leave the supplied cables complete, so as not to invalidate the guarantee.

My understanding is that the end of the cigarette charging cable includes both a fuse and a voltage transformer.

As such, it is not advisable to cut the Garmin cable - the best solution is to add a new cigarette socket behind the dashboard and simply plug the Garmin cable into this behind the dashboard.
