|
|
The speaker on my fathers Garmin i3 has broken. I therefore need to purchase a new speaker, but no-one I can find sells this very small but relatively high power speaker. Has anyone had to replace their speaker and if so where did they purchase one from? The speaker specs seem to be 36mm diameter x 5mm, 8 ohms, 1W power. |

yes, item is out of warranty. Its also disassembled at the moment, substituting another speaker (that wont fit in case) it then works fine.
I'll try Garmin as you say - hadn't thought they may sell spares. |

Phoned Garmin. They dont sell any spare parts, would have to be a chargable repair costing up to £80. New units can be had for very little more than that, so still need to source a speaker. |

Thanks for your suggestsions.
Have tried Maplin. The smallest speaker they stock is 45mm, and is a bit thicker (although that may not be a problem). The otehr issue is it is only rated at 0.2W rather than 1W - so may be a little quiet. Maybe I'll get one and see how it goes. |

It would be very quiet after the first few seconds at full power - it would burn out the coil and possibly damage the 'power' output stage of the i3 to boot. Desktop PC speakers (cheap ones) would probably suffice - I think they are about 1W output. Find a cheap set on eBay/car boot to dismantle. _________________ Phil |

A PC speaker will be too deep and wide - certainly my small speakers are as I've checked. There isn't much spare room within the case, which is why they have fitted a very thin speaker (5mm). I've found some distributors in Asia who supply similar spec speakers, but I imagine they only supply in large quantities to manufacturers - I've emailed and are awaiting a reply. |

I think you might find the component fitted to the i3 from the actual speaker manufacturer VECO, they do a wide range of different types of small speakers 36CS08FN-3-1 is the device fitted in the i3, a quick search using Altavista (not everyone uses Google) will turn up This Page where you will find very similar size/ ratings for a suitable replacement speaker select the Slim Plastic Cone Speakers 36MM link near the top of the page- Mike |

Yeah, excellent work (again ). Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but like many, I find the built-in speaker in the nuvis (310 in my case) a bit distorted at higher volume and was wondering about the feasiblity of replacing it with a speaker with higher output .. wonder if this VECO are the people (or are they OEM for Garmin?) or a trip to Maplin for me. Need to open the 310 to get dimiensions/spec from it first though .. :o |

With the Nuvi you have the advantage of an aux output socket to route the audio through to powered speakers/ FM Transmitters etc. The socket is not available with the i3 so if the speaker packs up you need a new one. Perhaps a thread I answered a while back might be interesting to increase the Nuvi volume have a read of This - Mike |

Hi Mike .. I'm on it! I was referred there re a similar question I had before and I'm just now waiting when I've got a free afternoon to fit it all.
This time, I was just thinking about the times where I'm using another vehicle, etc. |

For other vehicles I tend to use an FM Transmitter as these are small portable etc and work well with the Nuvi - Not too good in/ around London though as you struggle to find a free frequency to tune it to - Mike |
