TT5 slow to fire up?

Hi,

I'm running TT5 on my XDA Orbit however, it take about 90 seconds from the time i hit the TT icon on the screen to the time that it appears fully opened on the screen. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

I don't have any other programs running in the back ground (I always "X" them).

Finally I'm not talking about the time it takes to get a GPS signal, just the time to start the program.

It takes time to find the maps so maybe a faster SD Card would be to your advantage.

Mine takes 9 seconds with a Kingston Ultimate 133x card. (about 16x (actual) compared to the normal 4x)

The above advice re card speed is very valid, in addition look at how much spare memory the device has to work with.
Start/ settings_system tab memory icon, while in their look at running programs and use the stop all option before launching TomTom.
If you use the device for internet access clear out the storred pages as this consumes memory on the unit, given free memory and minimal other programs running in the back ground I would expect TomTom to start (to a usable state) in less than 20 seconds - it does on my Artemis - Mike

Thanks for the reply.

It was the fisrt thing that I installed when I bought the Orbit. It wasn't that slow when I first ran it. Would it be that I have 14 (small ish) programs now installed on the Orbit........is that slowing it all down?

Hi Mike,

I've deleted all internet files as you suggested and it's still running very slow. I reviewed the memory as you mentioned, below is the detail.

Storage
total 54MB
In use 21MB
Free 33MB

Program
Total 48 MB
In use 27 MB
Free 21MB

.......for some reason (I'm stupid) I've installed most of my programs onto the internal memory, not the card. Could this be causing me the problem? How can I identify the size of each individual program that I've installed?

I seem to remember, many months ago, where it was said that if you are not careful you could get a 'bounce' when tapping on TT and hit it twice, in effect getting TT running twice. If my recollection is right, maybe, as the screen has become more supple, it's easier to do it accidently.

I've tried search but can't find the post. Maybe someone elses memory is better than mine.

I doubt that memory is a problem looking at the figures you have just posted there is more free memory available on your device than either of my Artemis units, how many other programs are still running when you launch TomTom, if the answer is none this is pointing towards the memory card speed - Mike

How do I do that???

Would I copy the contents of the card to my PC-hard drive via active-sync. Then format the SD card and then copy all info. back to the SD card???

You mentioned "hidden folders and files" how would I ensure that they are included in the copy??

Ive tried installing tt5 on my xda orbit but i havent been able to configure the gps. In my list of com ports there is only
Com9
GPS Port
Com0
Com2
Serial Port

and no Com4. How did you guys connect yuour gps?

Try selecting the GPS Port from the list it should find the GPS that way - I assume the items you have listed are what appears in TomTom when configuring the GPS, also do not mess around with the GPS icon which could be in one of the settings pages, as this will confuse matters even further.
Baud speed is 9600 for the Artemis units - Mike

I think i already have changed the GPS settings, but i put them back to the original settings, i belive.

Its still not working, Is there a way to swith the GPS on and off? could this be the problem?

The default settings for the GPS applet on the Artemis is:

Programs tab - GPS program port = COM4
Hardware tab - GPS hardware port = None, Baud rate 9600
Access Tab - Manage GPS automatically = Ticked

If you set your values to those listed above does it make any difference?
The actual software application should automatically switch on the GPS when it is needed. The way to see if it is switched on the left LED will flash Orange with the receiver on - Mike
