I've posted this in a couple of places - to ensure that I get it in the right place!

Please be gentle with me - I'm pretty much a beginner.

I have a Handspring Visor PDA with 8k memory, running Palm OS v 3.1H2 and Tom Tom Route 4.10 (build 218) - this was formely known as Palmtop Route, I believe. I use a Magellan GPS companion for the Handspring which slots into the expansion slot on the PDA.

Now, Route is OK but that's as far as it goes. You can choose to calculate quickest or shortest routes but can not specify POI or "via" waypoints en-route. The map database is a bit basic and there is no postcode facility on it.

Basically what I am asking is: "Is there any better software that I can get to run on this kit?". Do you have any other suggestions?

I can not afford a new PDA or standalone device and so if the software can not be upgraded then I am going to live with what I have got.

I understand that there is "City Maps" software that is suitable - does anyone have first hand experience of this?

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome.

Please try not to triple post. Once is enough.

With your type of gear you are pretty much stuck "in the 20th century" You can look if Mapopolis supports the Visor, but don't hold your breath.
If your Palmtop Route works ok then that's probably the best you can get.

Thanks - Your answer is pretty much what I expected.

I would not normally triple post but as a "newbie" I was unsure where I would get the best response.

Many forums have the "View unread posts" feature, so it doesn't really matter where a post gets placed - there's nearly no chance that posts go unnoticed.

GPS Companion comes with the program that's in the firmware in the unit, and with two programs - one for map reading that plots your location, and one that gives you lots of data on your speed and direction and creates waypoints and routes (and allows you to see the waypoints on a route "plot" - essentially a very simple map you create. What's frustrating to a lot of folks who've been playing with this device for years is the inability to put the waypoints onto a map in the device.
Next Step: I'd love to start making my own maps for the Visor and I'd love to start experimenting with other software that replaces the basic programs that came with the GPS Companion.
Does Delorme's Solus put new software into the Visor? I've heard it discussed but never seen any screen shots.
