Having happily owned a Tomtom one new edition for 6 or so months I decided to "upgrade" and buy the Go 910, Faster processor, plays mp3's, Bluetooth handsfree calling etc etc, cant go wrong with this - or so I thought! After the initial usual hour or so fiddling about with the settings and its first couple of uses I soon began to realise I had spent £150 more than I had needed to. Comparing it side by side to my mates One new edition his actually worked most routes out slightly quicker, the map scrolling is the same speed while driving (what does the faster processor actually do faster), the bluetooth hands free is an embarrassing joke with 90% of conversations ending in "I cant hear you Graham - I will call you back" (3 different phones tried and microphone tried everywhere apart from actually swallowing it), mp3's sound ok but I didnt get too over excited, the volume setting - increase volume to noise level doesnt work at all unlike the One new editions link volume to vehicle speed which worked fine, and lastly in a list just off the top of my head, automatically switch to night mode or whatever it is works for a while then stops (I know the reset button sorts this out but should you really have to keep on pressing this every few days) Is it just me having these problems? People whom I work with ask me how the new unit is and I actually lie out of embarrassment especially to the lad I sold my old One new edition to! For my extra £150 the only thing that has given me no problem and works fine are the extra maps (which I will prob never actually use) it was mostly for the afore mentioned features I bought this product and it has taught me a lesson for future similar purchases - dont rush out and buy!!!!!!!

Yes u are right I have a go 300 which does everything I want and that is Navigation....If I want mp3's and video and all the other stuff I use a player for that purpose....

To be fair, the 910's biggest benefits are the Euro/US mapping and the Text to Speech Voice. Most of the other 'features' can be found on lesser x10 models.

The xtra processor speed is necessary as for every address look up it has to consult a much bigger seamless map than other units. Handsfree is very poor out of the box but much much improved with an exernal microphone.

I'm also using mine with the new FM Mount and my iPod which works very well.

But at the end of the day, for navigation alone most users would find the basic ONE more than good enough.

Oh I forgot to mention the text to speech! I have had people in the car screaming with laughter at some of the pronunciation the female version of R2D2 announcing "exit jay twenty seven" Anyway what about the other points I mentioned - the volume for instance that stays at a constant level and deafens you even without the engine running? You turn the volume down so its not too loud while you are driving and then receive a call but then have to turn it back up as you can hardly hear the caller! Come on apart from the maps the rest of it is nonsence once you start to use it properly!

Personally I much prefer the text to speech voice and don't use the auto volume setting as I relay the voice over the stereo. Horses for courses but I like the 910!

How does the mount stack up nowdays? I hear there were some major problems early on?

Also how viable is it to use as a hands free?

The MKII mount is much better although still not perfect. Hands free is only usable if you connect an external microphone.

Sounds like you've got a duff unit. Mine works fine as a handsfree kit. Works fine when automatically adjusting the volume. Works fine with the navigation volume control and the handsfree volume (you do know they're independent don't you?). It works fine 95% of the time reading out street names etc. The auto night mode works perfectly. Having one combined Euro map has also been very useful. Did you know that it reads the foreign names out in the correct local language e.g. Paris is pronouved 'Pari' etc. German towns are spoken with a German accents etc etc.

I'd suggest I've used mine properly and it's worked very well.

There must be something wrong with your unit for you to have all these issues.

Text to speech was the main reason I upgraded to the 910. Its a great idea badly implemented.

When it can be bothered to announce a road name or number it does so only seconds before the junction; far too late to allow a safe manoeuvre; meaning checking the screen well before is a necessity.

Also the way it reads motorway junction numbers is unbelievable; it usually come out with a list of 'J' numbers including the new adjoining junction number when this really doesn't matter because all you need to know is the exit number; the new road and the direction sign.

At other times it is strangely silent; meaning that I have no confidence that the TTS will tell me where to go and that navigating by screen is the only method.

Is it just me or did TT not bother to test this feature?

Thanks, but it was a "hard reset" I was after! sorted it now and hopefully it should resolve some of these issues - otherwise its going back and I'm going back to a One new edition.

i could not agree more i got the 910 and it was a pile of junk the mount was crap the tts was a computer voice which is crap
for three hundred and fity quid its

.
i have a garmin nuvi now and it beats tomtom 910 hands down
but as you say the best tomtom is the one
simple to use and does the job well
i just got one for a back up for my nuvi.

Thanks for that. At least I'm not the only one who thinks they have had their bottom slapped after buying one! Did a hard reset this morning and after thirty seconds of hard thinking - it's going. By the way, anyone who cares to read this please dont think I'm a whinging so and so - far from it, but I spent 350 quid of my hard earned cash on the 910 and compared to the One new edition at roughly 170 pound - got my arse kicked! Value for money and practicality the One new edition wins hands down. I did a Google this morning for Tomtom Go 910 reset and you should of seen all the stuff that came up with dozens of people unhappy with it as well. Take a look for yourself, I rest my case..

This is one time when i am going to agree with Darren Laughing

I got my 910 as soon as they were illegally available Laughing

i use it for what it is built for, NAVIGATION.
Ok it can shower you, dry you off an powder your arse from 10 yards but at the end of the day it works for me in as far as navigation is concerned.
It is not perfect, but i read some of these post's about some of the prob's and i think jeez i must be lucky, but then i don't load it up with all these unofficial extras that fold the paper and wipe your bum in two sec's flat.
Crazyhazy, i'm not saying this is what YOU have done but maybe i am the exception, my 910 works fine, when the mount has had it's Viagra.
