Can we have a choice over the format for the POI names when joining multiple POI categories...

1. Town name, POI name (current format)
2. POI name, Town name (new option)

Currently when multiple POI categories are joined it makes seeing what you are looking at hard work as the town name pushes the POI name off or virtually off the screen depending on the length of the town name and the POI name. Eg.

Canterbury, PC World to PC World, Canterbury

I know you can press and hold to view the whole title, but this is fiddly and often results in navigating to the POI and you can only see one name in full at a time.

My reasoning for joining POIs, before anyone askes...
I find it easier use the join categories so say all the shops are in one POI, the same way as the built in TomTom POIs are done, this means if I search for PC World using either Any Category or Shops it would find matches, whereas if I had a POI category PC World it would not be found on a search unless I select the PC World Category then the Town name.

A 3rd option of POI name too would be good, as that is the way TomTom does it.

If you look at my submissions guidelines you will see the examples

Star & Garter, Farnham
The Vyne, Basingstoke

Another example, a Sainsbury's store on a retail park

Water Lane, Farnham

and I am convinced that this is the best format. However I get all styles of text submitted in the Title field and I do try to make them consistent. There is little point submitting a Title of "Chip shop" in the "Fish & Chips" subcategory or even duplicating the subcategory name as in "The Plaice, Fish and Chip shop".

When processing submitted files for uploading into the database it is not always a simple matter to reformat the Titles to conform with a standard. So once again it is up to the submitters to read the guidelines and follow them - please.

I looked at the content of a download CSV for my readability in a speadsheet (I use OV2 for my TomTom).

When you combine sub-categories you suffix the sub-category name to the POI, this is my issue.

Example (with all shops combined into 1 POI):

I search Shopping for "PC Wor", example of matches:
===================
Horsted Retail Park, PC...
Another Retial Park, PC..
A Long Retail Park Name..
Another Long Retail Park...
===================

Can you see the problem, and of course not all the matches are necessarily PC World either, but it would be hard to tell in the current format.

TomTom doesn't include the area in the POI name, but if you have to can you prefix the POI name with the actual POI sub-category name, then I would see the following:
=================
PC World, Horested Ret...
PC World, Another Reti...
PC World, A Long Reta...
PC World, Another Lon...
=================

Do you see what I am saying now?

As far as I can see it is the way your database in processing the output data when combining POIs.

Just to clarify, you are saying that this is the way you want the POI names formatted? I definitely don't want that!!!

Consider the following:
=================
Longer Sub-cat Name, Hor
Longer Sub-cat Name, Ano
Longer Sub-cat Name, A L
Longer Sub-cat Name, Ano
=================

You say you are using TomTom, can you tell us what model and which function you are using to find POIs?

You say :

If you are looking for PC World why not search for "PC World" rather than "PC Wor"? Admittedly, you'd still get matches with "PC Worlde (Ye Olde)", "PC Worldly" & "PC World Domination" Laughing

I am using TomTom One v1 with software 6.56

I type "pc wor" as it is quicker than always typing the full name of the POI.

All I am looking for is the choice to have the POIs formatted that same as TomTom format them themselves, leaving un-clutted results on the screen. If I searched TomTom's own Shopping POI (if it had PC World in it) I would get a list of PC World on the screen, nothing more apart from the distance to them. With the current combined POIs from this site you get basically a list of shopping Centres which I don't consider very neat.

This is a personal preference, and as that data is stored in a database surely it should be an option.

BTW why would you want a list of shopping centre names when you are searching for something, personanlly I want a clear list that shows the full name of what I am searching for.

I normally use Search All POIs near me, or select a specific POI and in both cases type a partial of what I am looking for.

So yes I do want the clear format, personally I don't want the shopping centre/road listed at all on that screen, but if it has to be is should be second not first.

If you input "PC World" you will still get the List as

I have to admit that if I want a particular 'brand' of location, I would like to make sure that I can see it in the List.

This is how I do my All-in-One Petrol POI. I'm not too bothered about where it is, as long as it is the nearest (nearby), or 'on Route'.

Yey, you see my point and agree Smile

This should be an option, then everyone is happy.

Personally I would like the PocketGPSworld combined POIs to act the same as TomTom's built in - so no location, just the name then I'd see:

========================
5m (POI icon) PC World
15m (POI icon) PC World
25m (POI icon) PC World
35m (POI icon) PC World
45m (POI icon) PC World
========================

Other options: (current)
========================
5m (POI icon) A retail park, can..
15m (POI icon) Another retail par..
25m (POI icon) Town, PC World
35m (POI icon) Long Town Name,..
45m (POI icon) Test Mall, PC Wor..
========================

(alternative)
========================
5m (POI icon) PC World, A retai...
15m (POI icon) PC World, Anothe...
25m (POI icon) PC World, Town, ...
35m (POI icon) PC World, Long T...
45m (POI icon) PC World, Test M...
========================

Additonal details like phone number (if available) could be in details when you click on POI in browse map (if 3rd party POIs support this in OV2 like TomTom's built in POIs)

That's my point, Richard! If I've typed in PC World, then I don't need to see it displayed on each line!

Options 1 & 3 would "annoy" me, given that there is so little screen real estate available on a SatNav device, but each to their own Laughing. As long as we're talking about an additional option, I can't see the harm, unless I choose the wrong option when I download Embarassed Laughing

This is getting confusing with all these options. Crying or Very sad

What I want to see is:
For a single category download (eg "PC World")
Horsted Retail Park, PC...
Another Retail Park, PC..
A Long Retail Park Name..
Another Long Retail Park.

For a combined download (eg "Computer shops" - I know this example doesn't actually exist)
PC World, Horstead Re...
Mac City, Horstead Re...
PC World, Another Ret...
Sinclair Spectrum Museum, a Diff....

etc.

Tell me again - why would you need the name of the category when you are looking at a single category? And no blonde jokes please.

Personally I don't.

In a Single Category I would need only a Label, normally a Town/City name, for ident purposes. I'm not bothered about the address details. If I'm navigating there, to an unknown spot, the address details mean nothing. If I know the address, do I need the details?

In a Combined Category I would be looking for a particular 'brand' rather than 'any brand'.

Example: If I'm travelling to Anytown, some 200 miles away, and I needed to fill up with Petrol. I would choose Travel Via, and POI along route. This would List, in order, those that are on the route, and then those that are slightly off route.

If I had a Fuel Card, I could then select the 'brand' that matches the card with a quick scan down the List. NB. At this stage I haven't actually typed in a name, which to me is a plus.

This is mainly why I would 'prefer' the sub-category name first.

But I'm not going to throw the doll out of the pram if it isn't.Smile

I don't know any blonde jokes.

Those I've seen don't look as if they're joking!;)

Oh Poo!
Blame that on cut and paste! Embarassed

To confirm, I DON'T want the name of the category when looking at a single category.

Made a great job of clearing up the confusion there, didn't I? Rolling Eyes

Single categories with no sub-categories combined into them do not need the POI name in the title, it's only when combined the name should appear (and first I my opinion).

My shopping POI has all sub-categoies inside it (well actually split in 2 due to this sites download problem), so if I am looking for PC World for example I would search All POIs or the Shopping POI for "PC Wo" as that is quicker to type, now even if I typed "PC World" not all the matches are necessarily PC World, and with the current download format you basically see a list of shopping centre/town names due to width limitations on the screen. Examples shown above.

As I said before all I want is the option for TomTom style combined POIs where a combined POI only has the name of the shop in it, if I am looked for PC World I don't care where it is that would be the same for the Petrol POI too, I don't care where petrol station is, it would be the name (if at all) that I would want to know, so when searching the combined Petrol POI I would enter no text in the search bringing up all matches - either near me or near my destination depending on the search done.

Sorry to repeat myself - still no sure if everyone gets my point...
