Now that my v9 DVD are on the way. Can someone who'd managed to actually update their i3 let us know the various steps needed to put the new maps onto the TF card of the unit. Thanks in advance for any help. |

I'm still waiting for my DVD to arrive, so haven't tried updating my i3 yet, but when I asked Garmin what was involved I received this reply:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
Once your version 9 update arrives the DVD will contain map information of UK, Ireland and Europe, in which you can transfer to your i3. You would need to plug your i3 via USB into your computer and then follow the steps on the DVD, I have attached a guide to loading maps and everything you need to do in case you get stuck at all.
If there are any probs or you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Kind Regards,
Rebecca Turpin

I've already offered to send the guide to anyone who PMs me with their email address, and several members have done so. If you, or anyone else, wants the .pdf guide just let me have your email address. _________________ Anita

This is how I got V9 maps to work. Buy a card reader, copy old maps to PC (just in case). Remove old maps from card. Use Mapsource to send maps to card reader. Then remove all POI's with Garmin POI loader. Add the POI's you then whant.
Put back in I3 and it all works.
Hope this helps |

Thanks. Anita my impression was that you'd need a card reader as you wouldn't be able to get the maps on the TF using the unit itself but things might have changed with the new maps.
Harley where did you get the card reader for the TF card and are there some that are better than the others (e.g. accept larger capacity TF cards)? |

The information that Garmin sent out indicates that you can upload the new maps via the unit, and that a reader is not required.....
I still wanna know whether it is possible to install the updates onto a new card rather than the original?? |

Thanks for the .pdf Anita, it would appear that you can install what you need, then over write it if you need to go abroad, with the coutries that you would need, saving space on the sd for pois etc, do others concur? |

Snowboardcriminal that was definitely the case with my old Garmin V when I used to update the maps. Anita would it be possible to have a link to the above mentioned PDF?
Also what is the role of MapSource in all of this? |

Yes but to get to the port you would need the UK mapping as well, having it on a second card would be preferable? |

Yes you can download directly to the I3. However there is a POI problem (see home page of this site). The way round is to use a card reader, make sure it will read tranflash or get a SD addapter.
When I tried to just down load to the I3 it locked up. Thats way I used the card reader method. |

Can you suggest somewhere I can upload it to, and tell me how to do it? I can't post it here because it includes screen shots and I don't know how to include them. I did email it to one of the mods to ask if they could make a sticky like the speed camera help guides, which also contain screen shots, but had no reply.

According to the instructions, firstly to unlock the mapping. Then to select areas on the maps and to send them to the unit. _________________ Anita

You're saying the i3 locked up when you tried to download the maps to the unit? This is the method Garmin are telling people to use. Have you advised them of the problem, so they can look into it and change their instructions if necessary? _________________ Anita

Not sure if this will work as I've never tried it before! I've created an MSN Group and published the document there. I hope you can access it by clicking HERE! _________________ Anita

So now could be the time to upgrade the sd card to somthing much bigger, therefore fitting all the maps on, and more poi's. _________________ Don't eat yellow snow
