I've a new nuvi 300. Updated the software via the Garmin site and followed PGPS and Garmins advice to use Garmin's POILoader.

Unfortunatly none of the 4 control buttons display properly so I have no idea of what they are supposed to do. Having clicked on the top millimeter (barely shows) of the control buttons it looks like:-
- the 1st button returns the main POILoader screen
- the 2nd button finds the device
- the 3rd button exits POILoader
- the 4th button displays the PDF help file...

but I can't see anything that asks to point to a directory.

I've deleted and downloaded POILoader twice - and it does exactly the same thing each time!!

Moreover, the Garmin Gstart doesn't seem to be able to find the Nuvi - although it displays as a connected device in My Computer etc.

FWIW - I'm using XP Pro (SP2) - any ideas?

Hal.

Is it possible that you have changed the screen font size or dpi setting? Some poorly written programs can't handle dpi changes well.

No - or at least they shouldn't make a difference. The display settings for my ancient 19" crt Multi-sync Mitzubishi screen are set to: size 1024x768 / 32 bit / 96 dpi / using 'normal' fonts.

do you have the windows task-bar at the bottom of the screen? sometime if it has been moved to the top or the sides it can mess up how poi loader looks.

The Task Bar is at the bottom of the screen.

FWIW - I've downloaded both versions of POI (i.e. v2.3.2 & v2.4beta) both appear the same.

Try updating / reinstalling your graphics drivers.

Can you post a screen shot?

If you need instructions on either / both - shout.

Ok, checked the drivers and there fine. Discovered that if I restart and before the system has finished fully loading, I click POI I get a screen I can work with. However, once the system has fully loaded and I open 2nd POI the later window displays at a different size. So I guess that somewhere in the system there is a conflict.

Images of the 2 POI windows side by side shown here.
Any more ideas?

how bizarre... from what you say about it loading ok before the pc has fully loaded then i'd say there's some kind of conflict.

if you're interested (and have a bit of time) you could always do:

start --> run --> msconfig

and select the 'Startup' tab and untick each item one by one and reboot to see what is causing the issue.

News from Garmin:

-Start
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

Do you have the windows task bar any where else on the screen except the
bottom? If you have it on the sides or along the top then this is the
reason why you cannot see the buttons. We have also found that if you
have another menu or toolbar along the top of the screen other then the
task bar then this can cause the same problems so I would suggest
closing the menu or move the bar to the bottom again.
end-

Sure enough the MS tool bar was the problem!
