Hi there,
I don't know how often Tomtom replace their maps, but how do you know if the unit you buy has the latest, and is there a way of getting the latest from TT (without buying them). & no, I don't mean illegally, I simply mean that if I buy one of these units then I want to know I have *the* latest maps, and if not I would expect to get them from TT !!
I believe they do not offer any '12-month free map upgrades' or similar, or do I have this wrong ?
Thanks !

The latest maps are v660 and were released at the end of November this year.
You can check to see what map version you have from the same screen that details your Application version.
I bought my TTGo in the middle of December and it came with maps at version 650. I emailed TomTom about why I didn't have the latest maps etc.. and they said the difference were very small and not worth paying to upgrade but they plan to introduce another map at the end of April next year.
No chance of a free upgrade either to the latest maps despite pointing out that I bought this unit AFTER the new maps were released. _________________ TT GO 1005 |

Y'know what's "funny"? I guess if you look at the age of the map files on your GO you'll find them a bit older than the map files for the "new" maps.
I have two GOs, a 700 for which I downloaded the new maps 28th November and a 710 which I bought on 1st December.
The 710 supposedly (according to TomTom) does not need to get the new maps because its existing ones are the latest. Looking in the map folder I find the file modified dates for the .dat files (which seem to be the only ones which could be the maps) are 13/02/2006.
On the 700, similar files are dated 28/11/2006. I suppose there is a possibility that they have that date because that's the date I downloaded and installed the new map?
Now the interesting comment is that in the e-mail dated 7/12/2006, which TT sent me advising of the new maps, it said Quote: | Bring your map up to date!
Our brand new fully-featured maps contain thousands of kilometers of new roads - in fact we’ve added over 7000 new roundabouts across Europe during the last six months. |
The newest file date on my 710 original SD card is 24/05/2006. I cannot see how my 710's maps can have even one of those 7,000 roundabouts, can you? So the "very small differences" include at least 7,000 new roundabouts! 8O _________________ Dennis

Sorry, I forgot to say they planned to introduce these new maps at the end of April 2006 They variously promised them "Q2, 2006", then "Q3, 2006", then "soon". I was one of many who had a voucher for a free upgrade to these maps, with a voucher expiry date of 30th September, which they had to extend in order to honour it for the late maps. _________________ Dennis

Hmmm....well, I've posted the question to TomTom - to be honest I would not be happy getting a unit that had sat on a shelf for 6 months (& in the warehouse for 3 more) without a guarantee of getting the latest mapping (or a guaranteed upgrade).....
thanks for the comments, folks
cheers
