Hi all, I have had a few sat navs over the years. All pda based. I have now bought the latest TomTom software for my axim and it works like a dream :-) I was just wondering how they actually map the sat nav maps? I apologise if this is covered else where, please post the link.

Do they just get paper based road maps and mark all the turns and bends in the road? Or do they send out survey cars equipped with some fancy gps gadgets? Probably make a great How's it made epsiode.

Ah thanks very much. Both links a fantastic read. I can not believe the GPS sats only kick out about 20-50 Watts of power!

The Tele Atlas truck is a serious piece of kit.

Cheers Oldboy :-)

Yup 20 watts transmitted 20,000 miles into a device that could be the size of a box of matches! It's clever stuff Smile

I can't believe they can aim at your Sat Nav on your dashboard from all that way up there! At least with Satellite TV you have a great big dish on the side of your house for them to aim at!!
