Garmin Venture CX question re: software

Hello,
I just purchased a venture cx by garmin and find it to be a fine little unit for my hiking adventures....there is no software in the box and I was wondering what would be the best way to manage these things on my lap top. any free topo links?

Can anyone reccomend some free software/shareware, or should I just buy the stuff from garmin/mapsource?
