Garmin Etrex Vista reception

Hello, I am a new member to this site and have a question for everyone. I have the Garmin Etrex vista and I can't put the unit in a front shirt pocket and still get reception. Do you have to carry it out in the open to get reception? Even when wearing the unit from the lanyard, it still misses parts of the trip. I use the unit for hiking and can't imagine that you have to carry it in your hand all the time. Any help will be appreciated!! Does anyone have a solution??

The Etrex range seems to get the best lock when held flat as the antenna is behind the front panel above the screen.If you carry it in your shirt pocket try placing it with the screen away from your body.When its on a lanyard it spins in all directions so it is hit and miss when you have a signal,the best place to keep it for hiking is flat on top of a ruck sack to record your track and only taking it out to follow or track back..
