Using an external mic?

I tried using the internal mic on my Go 500 but people I was calling could hardly hear me. I then tried using an external mic but they said it was much the same. Since updating my firmware, I see there is now an option to specify an external mic. Is it possible that with the old firmware, although a mic was plugged in, it was actually still using the internal mic.
Also, is there a big difference in using a generic clip type mic compared to using a proper TomTom mic ?

I have used a non TomTOm microphone with success, after selecting the external microphone

The best piece of advice would be to upgrade the firmware on your TomTom this is easily done.
