Hi all,

I totally new to the GPS scene and have recently been given a Acer n35 with TomTom on the SD card. I use Esri ArcGIS products at work and wish to log my location and speed in such a way as to be able to import into ArcGIS.

What would be the most suitable programs for this. I dont care if the TomTom is used or not, as i know my way around i just want to log the details.

I have had a bit of a search on this forum, but a still a bit confused. People have mentioned VisualGPSce and GPS Speed Sentry, but i dont really know how i would get the data from these into ArcGIS.

Also i know the N35 has limitations due to its lack of grunt.

Any suggestions will be helpfull. I dont want to spend a packet on software as it is as a hoby rather than for anything useful.

Thanks

Hello Robinski

I am the developer of GPS Speed Sentry and for my day job I am a consultant for a GIS company specialising in ESRI software.

With GPS Speed Sentry you can record your track as a CSV file which you can then import into ArcGIS. All you need to do is use the "Add XY Data" option under the tools menu (use WGS84 as the coordinate system), once you can see the points you can then export the new layer as a shapefile. The good thing about this is that all of the attributes you want (eg speed) are then held against the points so you can make thematic maps etc.

I believe Vito Smart map can export shapefiles directly but I dont think this includes any attributes.

Thanks Trevor,

Thats great.

How does GPS Speed Sentry go in terms of memory needed to log data, as the n35 has limited memory?

Robinski

The application itself is pretty light weight.

As far as logging, Ive previously done an hours drive while logging at 1 second intervals and from memory the file was around 500kb. This equates to around 3600 points logged to the file.

It also depends on the amount of information you want. The application allows you to select only the info you want to log. Reducing the info logged will make for a smaller file Smile

Regards
