Hi folkes,
I posted this on two other forums and got two responses. One said any would be ok, the other said they used a specific one (an eTrex) in a similar (but not identical) circumstance. Based on the qualities of the reviews on this site I'm posting here hoping to more suggestions.

I'm going on a cruise around the pacific at the end of the year, and would like to take a GPS unit with me to log the journey.

* The room is fairly high above the water

* The room does not have a balcony, but it does have a moderate sized window

* The window is quite thick (I'm guessing ~1inch/2.54cm based on previous cruise) but has a pretty much 180degree unobstructed view of the sky/horizon and is about 20m above sea level

Based on posts I've read a sirf3 unit would be most appropriate in a situation like this. However would there still be too much shielding/interference due to all the metal in the ship or the thick glass etc?
It is possible to go to to an external location if necessary so I can just go out and get a fix every so often if I absolutely need to but I want to limit this.
Reading other posts it should be ok with the window, but I can go onto the roof if necessary.

Also the cruise is 2 weeks so I would probably leave it plugged in sitting on the window ledge most of the time like in the diagram below.

A few things that would be preferred though

* detailed map of australian cities (not necessarily pre-loaded)

* rough international map (coasts/major international cities)

* Be able to log (and store (on a sd card etc)) several thousand points(no more than 20k)

* Be able to download stored co-ordinates onto computer (possibly google earth compatible)

* portable

I was looking at the garmin 60Cx or a similar product (and garmin are no help at all with this). However I would like to know if I should just stop looking because it will never work, or if there is a better product that is moderatly priced
It seems like the tracks4australia would be ok for the australia maps (as would the garmin trackmap software)

Thanks in advance.

I've been looking for a new all pupose unit, 60csx is going to be it. It has the new Sirf3 receiver, and is external antenna capable, so you can stick the antenna on your window. The external memory slot should please all. Circuit City has it for under 4 bills right now.
