Is it possible to cut off the cigar lighter and wire the TT charger cable direct to a fused live and earth supply on my car. I am asking this as the manual states the charger is suitable for both 12v & 24v therefore there might be a vaultage dropper in the cigar plug.

DON'T DO IT!

TT needs 5v, NOT 12/24v and yes, the transformer is within the cig lighter plug.

I REPEAT. DON'T DO IT!

DON'T DO THIS. YOU WILL FRY YOUR GO!
(Sorry for shouting, but...)

As gpsn says, the cigar lighter plug contains a voltage regulator that drops the vehicle's 12 (or 24) Volts down to 5 Volts. Raw 12V is instant death to your Go.

What you CAN do, is wire a cable socket like this

from Maplins

into a suitable fused supply, then plug the TomTom adapter into that and hide the whole lot behind the dash.

Just a quick word of warning, if your vehicle is equipped with airbags be very carefull if messing around behind the dashboard, if you set one off it could cause serious injury, or if nothing else a serious blow to the cash flow.
Fitting the extra socket is a great and neat way of wiring the unit, just bear in mind the safety asspect at all times when messing around with electrics - Mike

Yes, sorry, I'd meant to add a rider, along the lines of "only do this if you are totally confident of your abilities with car electrics".
If you aren't, it would be a very easy job for any auto-electrician, especially if you supply the socket for him/her to use.
