Am I right in thinking that when I use Traffic, my mobile phone is constantly connected to the internet to gather the information?
If this is the case then it would cost an absolute fortune surely?
Or am I missing something?

Yes - you're missing something.
When a phone is connected to the internet via GPRS, you do not pay for the length of time you are connected. Instead, you only pay for the amount of data that is downloaded. |

And the data is not massive:
Initial download is about 40kb with updates around 5 - 7 kb.
In cost (on Vodafone) thats about 11p initially with 2p updates.

As often as you set it too.... choice is yours dependant on your needs and roads you drive on!
